I’ve lurked in subs like this for a long time and I always thought I’d be too embarrassed to share my experience if it ever happened to me. Well, it finally happened to me and it turns out that I don’t have any reservations about what you all know what happened. What do I have to be embarrassed about? I didn’t do anything wrong. Maybe I was a little heavy-handed with how I handled things, but I don’t regret it a bit.
I, 29 male, been married to my wife, Dora, 28 female, for three years now. We shared a few classes together in college and quickly became friends. After about a year, we started dating and got married a few years later. We built up a routine that worked for us. We both studied engineering in college, but I was the only one who was working. I made enough money for both of us and she wanted to focus on being a homemaker and taking care of the children.
The children hadn’t happened yet because the timing never seemed right. We were both eager to become parents, but something was always coming up. There was a period when I lost my job and we had to live frugally for a bit. Then I got a new, better-paying job, but we needed to move. It was one thing after another. The whole time, Dora wasn’t working. That’s why I got the pre-nup. I recommend every man do the same thing before getting married. I don’t care if you only have a mattress and a laptop to your name. If you’re a man who works hard, you’ll be in a better position one day and then you’ll have much more to lose.
I didn’t have much when we set up the pre-nup, but the idea was to make things fair for both of us. We came to an agreement that if she wasn’t going to work, then we would need to have a pre-nup. That way, I wouldn’t be left funding a cushy lifestyle for a woman who was basically just as qualified to work as I was. She agreed. She was a reasonable woman, at least she was when we got married. The point of it wasn’t just to protect me from losing what I had. The major part of the document laid out how much financial support I would provide to her if we split up after having kids. It was a fair amount of money that was supposed to make sure my children were well taken care of. The pre-nup played out a different story if we got divorced without kids. We’d split assets in an agreed-upon manner, and that was it. I wouldn’t be stuck paying her a chunk of my paycheck for years.
I wasn’t even completely sure what I was seeing at first. I just saw a guy on my wife and thought she was in danger. I feel so stupid looking back at it now, but I can’t blame myself either. It was a lot to process on the spot. I ran right over to her, pulled him off of her, and threw him halfway across the room. I only realized what was really going on when Dora screamed, “What are you doing?” and covered herself up. I stood there for a second, looking and feeling like an idiot. I took a few seconds to really assess the situation. The other guy was pulling his clothes on, but he didn’t leave the room. Dora looked scared, but the fear was directed at me. It finally dawned on me what was going on. It should have been obvious the moment I walked into the room, but I trusted her so much that my mind hadn’t been able to jump to the idea of her cheating on me.
When the other guy had his pants on, he tried to sneak out of the room. That shook me back to action. I snapped at him to stay, and he stopped moving immediately. Then I told him to stand beside Dora. I wanted to talk to both of them, and I wasn’t comfortable with him hovering somewhere behind my back. To my surprise, he listened immediately. Probably because I just launched him across the room like he weighed nothing. To be completely fair, he was a skinny guy, and I was amped up on adrenaline. It felt good to know he was scared of me, though.
I asked Dora to explain what was going on. She said I should let Luke go because this was between the two of us. I said he got into our business when he got into my wife, so he was part of this now. Then I told her to start talking. She sighed. Her hands were shaking, and Luke was staring at the floor. She tried to calm me down instead. Said I was scaring her, and she wouldn’t be able to tell me anything while I was like that. She really was afraid. Her voice was shaking. She said we could talk after Luke left. She was worried I would attack him again, and she didn’t want me to go to jail. I just said I threw Luke as a misunderstanding, and for all I knew I’d just seen a stranger in my bed. I promised her no one was going to get beaten up. Luke didn’t look like he believed me. That seemed to get Dora calm enough to start talking.
She spent a minute or two apologizing and telling me that she never meant for me to find out like this. You know, usual cheater stuff, and about how she really loved me and didn’t want to hurt me. I told her that she had a weird way of showing her love, and she actually had the nerve to say I wasn’t making this easy for her. She went on to say that she wasn’t feeling fulfilled in our relationship. She wasn’t happy being just a housewife, and she was looking for more out of her life. I reminded her that she was the one who had suggested staying home to take care of the home and kids. She was making it sound like something I’d forced her into. She just said it was what she wanted at the time, and now she changed her mind. She said it like I was the ridiculous one for not considering that. I agreed that it was fine to change her mind, but I reminded her that there was something married couples did when one of them had something major on their mind. They communicated. I asked why she thought cheating was a better idea than talking to me. She didn’t say a word. I told her she was full of crap. This had nothing to do with feeling unfulfilled with a decision she played a major part in making. She was just making excuses for herself. Her voice started shaking again, and she said it wasn’t true.
Luke spoke up and cut her off. He said he didn’t know she was married. I asked if he really wanted me to believe that he didn’t see the pictures of the two of us in the living room. He said she told him that we were separated and working on a divorce. He claimed she told him I’d moved out months ago. I asked my wife if it was true. She couldn’t meet my eyes, but she nodded. She said she had really wanted to leave me at the time, but now she realized that wasn’t what she really wanted. I said it was convenient that she realized that right after I caught her red-handed. I told Luke to get out. I didn’t have to say it twice. He scampered right out of the room without another look at me.
She started crying as soon as we heard the front door close. She said, “I know I made a mistake.” But I cut her off and told her to leave, too. She looked up at me and said I didn’t mean that. I promised her I did. She told me as clearly as she could that she didn’t want to be married to me anymore. But I wasn’t the one who was going to leave. She got out of bed and walked over to me. I moved away from her. I couldn’t get the image of her and Luke out of my head. I didn’t even want to be near her. She stopped a few feet away from me and begged me just to talk to her. She said she knew we could work through it if we went to therapy. She said she knew she needed professional help. I didn’t fall for any of it. Of course, I wasn’t happy to have to end my relationship, but there was no coming back from this. She’d slept with another man in my bed. There was nothing she could say that would make this right. So the only option left was divorce, and there was no way I was going to be the one to move out.
We argued about that for a while. During that time, she put her clothes back on, and we ended up in the living room. I was still angry and disappointed, but I cooled down after a bit. Eventually, we settled on giving her a few days to move out. In the meantime, she’d stay in the guest room. That’s the arrangement we’ve been living with so far. She sticks to her room most of the time, and I stay out of the house as much as possible. Between going to work and meeting with a lawyer, I always had something to keep me busy. Yeah, I’m already processing a divorce. Dora knows that she’s not happy about it. She was convinced that we were just going to start with a separation and that we’d be able to fix things somehow. I’ve told her already that there’s no chance of that. Just looking at her makes me feel sick. There’s no way she can make me love her again. Dora has already made plans to move in with her mom. She lives an hour away and they don’t have the best relationship. Neither of them is thrilled about her moving back in, but she doesn’t have any better options. Her mom even called me to see if we could work something out. When I explained how I’d walked in on her and her affair partner, she sighed, called her daughter some names, and said she understood. I’ll post an update if anything interesting happens, but I have a feeling it won’t. She’s moving out soon and the prenup should make the divorce pretty uneventful.
Update. In my last post, I said there probably wouldn’t be an update because the prenup would make things uneventful. I’m sure you can guess by the fact that I’m here again, but I was wrong. There was still a lot to come. Dora left two days after my first post, just like we agreed. She cried a lot that day and begged me to change my mind. I went back into my room and closed the door until she left. When I talked to my lawyer originally, he practically lit up when he saw my prenup. He went over it carefully and said it was solid. He was happy that I had insisted on her getting her own lawyer to go over it. He said that would make it a lot harder for them to challenge it in court. He was right. I’d always expected the prenup to make the divorce a much more streamlined affair. We had a legal document between two adults that determined how everything was supposed to be split. That seemed straightforward to me, but that didn’t stop her lawyer from doing his best to get the prenup dismissed. He argued that the agreement was unfair because she spent three years out of the workforce. My lawyer responded with proof that it had been her suggestion and a mutual agreement. Then he tried to argue that she hadn’t understood the document fully before signing it. That didn’t work either since she had her own attorney. There were records that she and her attorney had negotiated several changes that made their way into the final document. She was fully aware of what she had signed. None of their arguments were convincing, but that didn’t stop them from trying their hardest and dragging things out as long as they could. Eventually, the judge upheld the agreement as reasonable. Nothing had changed significantly since the marriage started. Our relationship had ended under terms that were clearly stated in the prenup.
Once they realized they couldn’t get the prenup thrown out, they switched their focus to individual assets. One of those assets was Dora’s SUV. She loved that car. It was an older model of Porsche Cayenne, and we got a fantastic deal on it, which is the only reason we even had a Porsche. She had done all sorts of things to make the car as nice as she wanted. It was in a lot of her Instagram posts, too. She was the only one who used it, but I paid for the car, its maintenance, and the changes she had made to it. It was under my name. According to the terms of the prenup, it was mine to do with as I pleased. If the divorce were under any other circumstances, I would have just let her have it. But I wasn’t feeling very generous towards her. First, there was the cheating, and then she tried to weasel her way out of an agreement we’d both made together. She didn’t deserve any kindness from me. I still remember the look on her face when I said I wanted to keep the car. She couldn’t believe it. That was enough for me to know I was making the right choice. She deserved to know what it felt like to lose something you loved.
She fought hard to keep it. They tried every excuse. They said it was going to be her only source of income after the divorce. They claimed she wanted to use it for ride-sharing until she got a job. My lawyer pointed out that the prenup awarded her a sum of money for exactly that reason. It was supposed to provide her enough support for a few months. After that, she was on her own. Even that felt like more than she deserved, but the prenup would have been thrown out if she got nothing. Paying her that money was a small sacrifice to get a bigger win. They tried sentimental attachment, but that was an even weaker excuse. In the end, they said I was just trying to be vindictive. The judge said that it didn’t really matter. The prenup gave me ownership of it, and I could do whatever I wanted with it. That seemed to bother her more than the divorce, honestly. It didn’t really surprise me. For all her talk of wanting to get back together and try to fix things, I knew she was already over the relationship. She was just hanging on because I was her sole source of income. If she’d done the right thing and told me she wanted a divorce without cheating on me, then she’d at least have Luke. I’d probably have left her the car, too. Instead, she wanted to have her cake and eat it, too. Now, she had no job, no car, and had to live with a mom who didn’t want her around.
She wasn’t afraid to let me know just how miserable she was. She actually harassed me over the phone after it was decided that I would keep the car. I answered the first call thinking it was something important. She threw a barrage of insults at me instead. She called me names and even a few slurs because I took the car. I didn’t bother arguing with her. She wasn’t thinking straight. I honestly thought she was drunk. But she kept calling. She called me dozens of times over the next two days and sent me several messages. I ignored all of them, but I didn’t block her. I wanted to have a record of her harassment in case things got out of hand. Things didn’t really escalate much, but they ended when she threatened to have the car stolen and I went to the police. I showed them a record of the harassment including her threat. They didn’t do anything about it, though. They said she was just a bitter ex-wife and she wasn’t going to follow through. It was annoying to have my concerns dismissed like that. If I were the one making threats and she went to the police, I’d be arrested within the hour. But she was just a harmless ex-wife. It wasn’t completely useless, though. There was an official record of the complaint, and when I told her about it, the harassment stopped. I didn’t hear from her at all after that.
The next call came from her sister. She sounded frustrated, but she didn’t seem to be angry at me. She said she knew it was a long shot, but she asked if there was any chance that Dora and I could work things out. She didn’t push when I told her I’d moved on already. She just told me what was going on with her sister. I don’t think she really cared about updating me on Dora’s life. It was more like she was tired of her and wanted to vent. She told me Dora moved out of her mom’s place after a fight and moved in with her a little later. Dora got along better with her sister, but she lived even farther out than her mom did. She basically had to leave all of her friends behind just to move in with her. As a result, Dora was lonely and miserable. She spent most of her time moping around at home or using her sister’s car to DoorDash while she looked for work. I don’t feel bad for her, but I was pretty disappointed at how far she’d fallen. We were building up a great life together, and now she was starting all over because she couldn’t stay faithful.
I didn’t hear anything about Dora after the call with her sister. I was glad to keep it that way. I’m not exaggerating when I say the image of her and Luke haunted me for months. That’s not something you forget easily. Moving on has been surprisingly easy. There wasn’t much left in the house to remind me of her. She took everything that was hers when she left. If there was anything that reminded me too much of her, like the couch or the table centerpiece she loved, then I just sold it. Call me petty, but it was pretty satisfying to sell the SUV. I didn’t need it after all. It just felt nice to not let her have it. She didn’t deserve a prize for cheating on me and blowing up our marriage. It honestly just feels like one bad decision on her part snowballed into 20 worse ones. If she was unhappy and wanted out of the marriage, she could have just left. Instead, she cheated, got caught, tried to get out of the pre-nup she willingly signed, and then seemed genuinely surprised that none of that worked in her favor.
