Ryder was famous in town for two things: fighting and getting away with things. He was 24, rich, handsome in a cruel way, and convinced the world owed him applause. His father, Calvin Cain, owned Cain Combat Academy and sponsored half the festival. Ryder had online followers, a regional belt, and friends who laughed before he finished jokes. He enjoyed winning, but he enjoyed making people smaller more.Emma met him by accident near the lemonade stand. She stepped back, someone bumped her shoulder, and the drink splashed across Ryder's jacket. The circle formed instantly."I'm sorry," Emma said. "I didn't mean to."Ryder looked at his sleeve, then at the phone already filming him. "Well," he said loudly, "little waitress ruined my jacket."Emma froze at the word waitress. Daniel heard her breathing change before he understood why. He turned and saw his daughter standing before Ryder as if the ground had disappeared. He walked over."Is there a problem?" he asked.Ryder looked him up and down. "This yours?"Daniel's jaw tightened. "She apologized.""She stained a custom jacket.""I'll pay for cleaning."Ryder laughed to the crowd. "He'll pay for cleaning."Daniel opened his wallet. Inside were three twenties, two singles, and a grocery receipt folded beside Emma's old photo. He held the cash out."Take it," he said. "Let it end."Ryder stared at the money, then slapped it from Daniel's hand. The bills scattered over the grass. Emma flinched; Daniel did not. That bothered Ryder more than anger would have. Bullies understand fear. They understand shouting. Calmness feels like disrespect because it refuses to worship them."Pick it up," Ryder said.Daniel looked down at the money, then back at Ryder. "No."The crowd shifted. Ryder's smile thinned. "You think you're tough?""I think you're loud."A few people gasped. Emma tugged Daniel's sleeve. "Dad, please."Daniel nodded once. "We're leaving."He took her hand and turned away. That should have been the end. But Ryder had an audience, and an audience can turn a cruel man into a monster. He grabbed Daniel's shoulder from behind. The second his fingers closed on Daniel's shirt, Victor Hale stepped out from the back of the crowd. "Ryder," Victor called, "leave him."Ryder barely looked over. "Stay out of it, old man."Victor's eyes stayed on Daniel. "I said, leave him."Daniel slowly looked at Ryder's hand on his shoulder. With one gentle movement, he removed it, using just enough pressure that Ryder's fingers opened against their will. Only Ryder felt the strength behind it. His face changed for half a second, then pride covered it."Oh," he said. "So, Daddy has a little grip."Daniel said nothing.Ryder pointed toward the demonstration mat. "Get in there.""No.""What, scared?"Daniel looked at Emma before he answered. "Being called scared costs nothing. Becoming violent costs everything."Some people laughed; others stopped. The line sounded strange from a man who looked dangerous if he stopped caring.Ryder leaned around Daniel and looked directly at Emma. "You hear that? Your dad gives speeches because he cannot fight."
