Faster this time, combination. A faint high, a grab low, his body dropping for a takedown, arms shooting for her legs. It was a good shot. Clean technique, real power behind it. Against most people in that room, it would have worked without argument.

Zoe sprawled. Her hips dropped back and down, her weight shifting in a single practiced motion that her body had performed so many thousands of times it didn't need her brain to approve it first. Brody's arms found air where her legs had been. His momentum carried him forward and down, and before he had finished processing what had gone wrong, she was behind him. She took his back.

Both hooks in, her legs securing his hips, her chest against his back, and her right arm sliding under his chin. Not violent, not wrenching, just inevitable. The rear naked choke locked in with the quiet precision of something that had been practiced until it was simply a fact of her body. Brody tapped the mat with his palm. 11 seconds after first contact, Zoe released immediately, stepped back, extended her hand.

The room detonated. It wasn't organized noise, it was the sound of 20 people reacting all at once, each one differently, and the result was something that bounced off the walls and ceiling, and came back louder. Phones swung toward each other, checking footage. Someone actually shouted. Avery, standing at the edge of the mat, had both hands pressed over her mouth, eyes enormous.

Brody stared at Zoe's outstretched hand. His chest was rising and falling. His face had gone a deep blotchy red that had nothing to do with physical effort and everything to do with what had just happened to him in front of 25 people and at least six cameras. The performance smile was gone. There was nothing in his expression now that was designed for an audience.

This was just Brody Walter unfiltered. And what was underneath was not pretty. He did not take her hand. He stood up on his own, turned away, and walked to the edge of the mat. Theo lowered his phone slowly.

Nobody in Brody's circle was making noise anymore. Zoe lowered her hand. She was not embarrassed. She was not angry. She turned to step off the mat and found instructor Takahashi standing two feet away.

Watching her with an expression she hadn't seen on an adult's face in a long time. It was the expression of someone recalibrating everything they thought they knew about a situation. "Who trained you? " he asked. His voice was quiet enough that only she could hear it. "My grandfather. " she said.
