The notation was a finding. The finding was sustained.

The pattern notation was placed in Pruitt's personnel file as a permanent record. He was removed from the school zone patrol assignment. He was assigned to administrative duties pending a mandatory performance review program.

The city school district's superintendent sent a letter to the police department's chief of professional standards, requesting a review of the school zone patrol assignment process—specifically the criteria used to select officers for community-facing roles involving children, and the information from personnel files that was required to be consulted before such assignments were made. The letter was three pages; the superintendent had written it himself.

The chief of professional standards acknowledged receipt within 24 hours and committed to a 60-day review. The review was completed in 54 days. Its principal recommendation was that prior complaint history, read in sequence and not individually, be a required component of every assignment decision for school zone positions. The recommendation was adopted.

Winston Beaumont continued picking up Amara every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. He pulled into the pickup line at 2:40. He turned off the engine. He returned his emails. The pickup line moved in the stop-and-go rhythm of all school pickup lines everywhere, and Amara came through the doors, found the truck, climbed in with her backpack and her elephant keychain, and opened her library book. He drove home. He timed the route.

Amara did not mention the Wednesday on Thorndale Avenue again. She had said what she had to say on the curb, and she had said it completely, and she did not need to say it again. This was consistent with how she was. She had his capacity for stillness, which meant she understood when a thing was done and when it was time to move on to the next thing.

He had told her mother that evening. Her mother, Renata, had listened to the full account without interrupting.

She had said when he finished, "She asked him to please let her daddy go."

He had said, "Yes."
