Herman Robinson heard footsteps crunching behind him and turned around. A police officer was walking straight toward him. Now, most people in this situation would probably feel their stomach drop with nervousness, but Herman Robinson had spent 43 years going toe-to-toe with police officers in courtrooms across the state. He'd seen every trick, every manipulation, every underhanded tactic in the book. He knew his rights better than most lawyers half his age. So, when he saw this officer approaching, he wasn't scared. He was curious.

The body camera strapped to Officer Brew's chest was recording everything about to unfold.

Officer Brew closed the distance and immediately launched into aggressive questioning. He demanded to know what Herman was doing there. Herman calmly explained he lived there. This was his home. He was doing yard work.

But Officer Brew didn't believe him—not for a second. He scanned Herman up and down, scrutinizing his worn work clothes, his dirt-caked gloves, the sweat glistening on his face. In his mind, this didn't add up to homeowner. In his mind, this looked like the help. Maybe a hired gardener, maybe day labor, but definitely not someone who could actually afford to live in a house like this.

Officer Brew then demanded identification. Herman told him his wallet was inside the house because he was doing yard work, and you don't exactly need a wallet to pull weeds in your own backyard. Seemed perfectly reasonable, right?

Not to Officer Brew. He insisted Herman produce identification immediately.

Herman Robinson planted his feet. He turned the tables, asking Officer Brew why he was even on his property in the first place. What crime was he suspected of committing? Was he being detained?

These weren't random questions. These were lawyer questions—surgical questions designed to expose whether this encounter had any legal standing whatsoever.

Officer Brew hated being challenged. His body camera captured every word of what he said next. He told Herman that in a neighborhood like this, when he sees someone who looks like Herman, he has every right to investigate. He said people like Herman don't usually live in places like this. He said Herman should just cooperate and show his ID instead of making things difficult.
