"Did you photograph where you found it?"

"No."

"Did you log it?"

"I said I was getting to it!"

Rachel's eyes narrowed. "Then why is it in your pocket?"

Dalton's face reddened. "Because I'm handling the scene!"

Marcus felt Daniel shift beside him. Every question Rachel asked forced Dalton to explain a decision that had seemed perfectly reasonable when nobody challenged him. That was the power of a witness willing to speak.

Dalton suddenly pointed toward Marcus and Daniel. "Put them in my cruiser."

Rachel didn't move. "What?"

"Help me move them. We'll sort this out at the station."

Marcus's heartbeat deepened. That was new. Dalton wanted them away from the park, away from the witnesses, away from whatever he feared the key represented.

Rachel looked toward his cruiser, then back at him. "Under what charge?"

"Obstruction."

"How?"

"Non-compliance."

Rachel shook her head. "That's not enough."

Dalton stared at her. "I'm telling you to assist!"

"And I'm telling you I need a lawful basis."

The words were quiet, but for the first time all afternoon, someone had told Eric Dalton no.

Clare's phone rose another inch. The food vendor straightened. The older man with the newspaper looked directly at Rachel. Marcus felt something loosen in his chest. Not relief, not yet, but the silence had cracked.

Dalton seemed to feel it, too. He looked around and realized the crowd was no longer simply watching two suspicious men being detained; they were watching him being questioned by another officer. His control of the story was slipping.

"Fine," Dalton muttered. He stepped away. His fingers went to his shoulder radio.

Marcus saw panic move behind the anger. Dalton pressed the transmit button halfway, then released it.

Rachel watched him. "What are you doing?"

"Calling a supervisor."

"Good."

Dalton's eyes snapped toward her. That wasn't the answer he wanted. He turned away, speaking too quietly for Marcus to hear.

Daniel leaned toward Marcus. "She found it."

Marcus knew what he meant: the transmitter. "Yes."

"She knows?"

"She knows something."

"Think she'll expose us?"

Marcus looked at Rachel. "No."

"How can you tell?"

Marcus watched her carefully reposition herself between Dalton and the bag. "Because she already could have."

Daniel went quiet. Rachel had touched the transmitter; she had felt the hidden device beneath the lining. She could have pulled it free and demanded an explanation. Instead, she had covered it again. That choice mattered.

Dalton turned back from his radio. "Supervisor's tied up. We're moving them ourselves."

Rachel folded her arms. "No."

Dalton blinked. "No?"

"Not until you tell me what lawful basis you have for transporting them."

Dalton's face hardened. "You trying to embarrass me?"

"This isn't about you."

"It sure feels like it!"

Rachel looked at Marcus's wrists, then at Dalton's pocket. "I think something about this stop isn't right."

The sentence changed everything. A murmur moved through the witnesses. Dalton heard it; his face flushed.

"You've been here five minutes!"

"Long enough to see two cuffed men, no contraband, no clear offense, and property in your pocket that you haven't logged."

"Careful, Rachel."

"No, you be careful."

Marcus watched her. There was fear in Rachel's eyes now—not fear of physical danger, but the quieter fear of knowing a choice could follow you into tomorrow. She knew what challenging another officer could cost: reputation, assignments, friendships, perhaps a career. But she stayed where she was.

Dalton reached for his radio again. Marcus knew the operation was approaching its breaking point. The surveillance team had heard everything through the transmitter; Laura Bennett would already be evaluating whether to move.

Dalton pressed the radio button. Marcus spoke:

"Eric."

Dalton stopped. His head turned slowly. Rachel looked at Marcus; so did Daniel.

Marcus's voice remained calm. "Where is Locker 214?"
