"Anybody can say that," Doyle said, louder now—loud enough that the two people on the far bench, a retiree with a tow receipt and a nurse in scrubs filing a stolen bike report, both looked up. "Anybody can carry a folder.""Then open it," Monroe said. "Read what's inside before you decide what it says."Doyle didn't open it. He set it on the counter out of Monroe's reach. And that was the moment Ruth's pen came back up—not to write, but because her hand had started to shake, and she needed something to hold on to."Sergeant Kittredge," Doyle called over his shoulder. Not to ask for help—to be watched doing this the right way. "Got a guy here won't cooperate."Sergeant Ray Kittredge came out of the back hallway unhurried, with the calm of a man who closes complaints for a living. He looked at Monroe for exactly two seconds—long enough to clock the suit, the folio on the counter, nothing more—and said, "Doyle, handle it."That was an exit ramp. Kittredge could have asked for the folio. He didn't.Monroe stood, not fast. Hands still open, still reaching carefully now toward the folio Doyle had taken from him."Don't," Doyle said."I'm getting my identification," Monroe said, nothing more.Doyle swung before Monroe's hand closed on the leather. The punch caught him high on the cheek, and Monroe went back against the bench, one hand up too late to catch himself, blood already finding the corner of his mouth. The nurse was on her feet. The retiree hadn't moved. Ruth had her hand flat on the counter, staring at the man on the floor, at the folio still sitting where Doyle left it, unopened. And then the doors did something none of them had ever seen the doors do.The glass at the front entrance locked with a sound like a bolt dropped into a socket. And it wasn't the only one: down the hall, the property room door clicked; the side exit clicked. On Ruth's monitor, the amber tag on Monroe's appointment turned solid red. And beneath it, new text: Restricted Appointment – Distinct Flagged Records Hold – All Access. She had never once seen it go red.The lobby camera feed had frozen on a single frame—Doyle's fist an inch from Monroe's face—and would not unfreeze.Doyle looked at his own hand like it belonged to someone else."I didn't do that," Kittredge said to no one, already reaching for the radio at his shoulder. He glanced at the monitor, but not long enough to read the words on it before he keyed the mic: "Dispatch, this is Sergeant Kittredge at the front desk. Subject became combative during processing. Officer responded. Requesting units to assist with lobby lockdown, cause unknown."
