And in his experience, people sitting in his lobby were supposed to behave one of two ways. Either deferential or nervous. She was neither.

"I'm going to need to see your ID," he said.

"I've already provided my visiting credentials to the desk officer."

"I'm not the desk officer." He took a step closer, bringing his shadow over her. "I'm asking you now. You want to make this easy, or you want to make it difficult?"

Josephine set down her folio with a slow, deliberate movement. She began to rise from the chair. Smooth, unhurried, hands completely visible.

"I'm standing up," she said, clearly and calmly. "I'm going to reach into my jacket for my credentials."

She said it the way people say it when they are trained to say it. Announcing the movement, removing all ambiguity, giving him every possible opportunity to stand down.

Pruitt didn't stand down.

What happened next took less than two seconds. It would later be documented in a federal indictment addendum, reconstructed from four separate camera feeds, and replayed approximately 40,000 times in federal courtrooms, news segments, and congressional hearings over the following 18 months.

As Josephine's right hand moved toward the inner pocket of her jacket, measured, visible, deliberate, Pruitt lunged.

He didn't reach for his taser. He didn't reach for his cuffs. He drew back his right hand and drove his closed fist into the left side of her jaw, with the full weight of 240 lb behind it.

The sound was awful.

Josephine's head snapped sideways. The force of the blow drove her backward into the plastic chairs, which skidded and clattered across the tile.

She caught herself with one hand on the armrest of the nearest chair, preventing herself from going fully to the floor. And for a moment, she was simply suspended there. Half standing, one hand braced against the chair, the left side of her face already showing the first dark bloom of bruising below her cheekbone.

Blood touched the corner of her mouth. She could feel it.

The deputy at the front desk, a young woman named Sandra Tran, had both hands pressed flat to her desk, her face white as paper. Two officers on the far side of the bullpen were frozen mid-step.

Pruitt stood with his fist still raised, breathing hard, adrenaline singing through his system.

"I told you to show ID first," he said to nobody in particular, constructing the story before anyone else could.

Josephine straightened.

She did it slowly. She did it carefully.

She did not reach for the service weapon holstered at her hip, though she was qualified on three different platforms and could have ended the conversation in a different and permanent way. She did not rush Pruitt. She did not raise her voice.
