Before Hayes could formulate another pathetic plea, the heavy metal door to Room 114 swung open violently. Standing in the doorway was Robert Danvers, the chief of the Airport Police Department. Danvers was a seasoned bureaucrat—a man who spent more time managing public relations crises than overseeing actual police work. He had been alerted to the disturbance by Brenda, the terrified TSA agent who had watched Hayes drag a passenger away."Hayes, what the hell is going on in here?" Chief Danvers barked, stepping into the room. He looked at Valerie, taking in her Yale hoodie and jeans before glaring at his officer kneeling on the floor. "You can't just drag passengers into the back without—"Danvers's voice trailed off as his eyes landed on the table. He saw the gold shield. He saw the credentials. He had seen Valerie Gibson's face on CNN just three nights ago discussing domestic cybersecurity threats. Chief Danvers's jaw slacked; all the color drained from his face, leaving him looking like a freshly poured wax figure."Director Gibson," Danvers whispered, instinctively snapping to a rigid posture. "My God, Director Gibson, I am so incredibly sorry. I had no idea you were in my terminal.""Chief Danvers, I presume?" Valerie asked, not breaking eye contact with the man."Yes, ma'am. Chief of Police for Hartsfield-Jackson." Danvers was sweating profusely now. He looked down at Hayes, who was still trembling on his knees. "Director, whatever this officer has done, I assure you, it does not reflect the values of this department. I will have him suspended immediately. Unpaid leave. I will handle this."
