Miller hastily retrieved the red leather Cartier box from the flat trunk lid, where Carter had callously tossed it like garbage. He handed it to her gently with both hands, bowing his head slightly—a subconscious, desperate gesture of complete submission. Valerie accepted the expensive box, slipping it safely and securely back into her right pocket.

Then she reached calmly into her left pocket and pulled out the crisp white, tightly folded store receipt. She held it out into the narrow space separating her from the two patrolmen.

"Read it," she commanded softly.

Miller took the receipt, his panicked eyes frantically scanning the printed black ink. "Cartier Tank Française," he read aloud, his voice trembling uncontrollably. "Paid in full, cash transaction, $4,250. Timestamped..."

"Timestamped at exactly 2:14 in the afternoon. It is currently 2:20," Valerie stated plainly, locking her dark, piercing eyes directly with Carter's wide, terrified gaze. "I was inside that department store for exactly three minutes after the cash transaction was finalized. I did not run. I did not evade. I walked calmly out the front door. Yet you, Officer Carter, felt it was entirely appropriate to aggressively bypass all mandatory protocols of a standard investigative stop, lay hands violently on a compliant civilian, use excessive physical force, and place me in metal handcuffs without verifying a single solitary piece of evidence."

Carter swallowed incredibly hard, a prominent bead of cold sweat tracing the sharp line of his jaw. "Chief... Chief Thompson, I... we got a frantic call from mall security. We were actively acting on a confirmed direct report of grand larceny. He explicitly said he saw you physically conceal it."

He pointed a trembling, desperate finger directly at Todd, frantically trying to shift the crushing, insurmountable weight of legal liability.

Todd threw his hands up defensively, his eyes impossibly wide with mounting panic. "Hey, do not put this massive mistake on me! I just saw her put the jewelry box into her hoodie pocket without carrying a store bag! You guys are the sworn police officers! You are supposed to actually investigate the situation!"

"And investigate is exactly what you fundamentally failed to do," Valerie said, stepping one deliberate pace closer to Carter.

She did not raise her deep voice, but the terrifying intensity of her controlled tone made Carter physically shrink backward against the side of his marked police cruiser.

"You looked at my casual clothes. You looked at the color of my skin. You listened blindly to an undertrained, overzealous retail security guard, and you made a definitive, aggressive choice. You entirely bypassed the law to violently enforce your own deeply rooted prejudice. You did not ask basic questions. You gave violent, escalating commands. If I were a frightened nineteen-year-old kid without thirty years of dedicated law enforcement experience to keep me calm, what would have ultimately happened here today, Carter? Would you have drawn your service weapon? Would I be breathing right now?"
