Nia pulled back instinctively, trying to break his painful grip. "Let go of me!""There it is." Mercer twisted her arm behind her back and drove her forward, slamming her against the row of chairs in front of her. "Resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer."The metal chair backs bit into Nia's ribs as Mercer pressed his weight against her. She kept her right hand open and visible, palm facing outward. "I haven't assaulted anyone. What crime have I committed? Tell me what law I've broken.""You pulled away from me. That's assault on a police officer." Mercer's handcuffs clicked around her wrists, metal biting into her skin as he cranked them tight behind her back. "And you're sitting where you don't belong."Vale shifted uncomfortably, still clutching the program. "Brett, maybe we should—""Should what? Let her get away with it?" Mercer hauled Nia upright, her graduation cap falling to the floor. "She's a fraud, and she just assaulted me in front of three hundred witnesses."The ceremony's sound system squealed with feedback as the microphone picked up his voice. Every conversation in the auditorium died. Hundreds of people turned to stare at the Black woman in handcuffs being held against the chairs by a white police officer."Ladies and gentlemen," Mercer announced, his voice carrying through the wireless mic system, "this individual has been impersonating a graduate and has just assaulted a police officer. The ceremony will continue once we remove her from the premises."In the production booth above the main floor, student technician Jasmine Price watched the confrontation through the camera monitors, her finger hovering over the recording controls. The main graduation feed was running, but so was the backup system—the one that captured everything, including audio from the wireless mics the officers wore for security coordination. She kept both systems rolling.Nia lifted her head, searching the crowd until she found him.Calvin Lawson sat six rows back, his dress blues immaculate, his face carved from stone. Around him sat twenty Marines in their finest uniforms—men and women who had served with Nia, who had traveled across the country to watch her graduate.Mercer followed her gaze and sneered. "Friends of yours? They can watch you leave in handcuffs. Vale, escort her out. Now."Calvin Lawson rose from his seat. Twenty Marines stood with him. Twenty-one Marines stood in perfect formation across the auditorium aisle, their dress blues catching the stage lights, ribbons and medals gleaming against dark fabric.Calvin Lawson's voice cut through the stunned silence like a blade: "Officer, release my daughter. Now."Mercer's grip tightened on Nia's cuffed arms. "Your daughter is under arrest for impersonating a graduate and assaulting a police officer.""Master Gunnery Sergeant Calvin Lawson, retired." Calvin's words rang with decades of command authority. "The woman you're restraining is Lance Corporal Nia Lawson, United States Marine Corps. She served two tours overseas before earning her degree with distinction." Calvin gestured to the Marines flanking him. "These men and women served beside her. They traveled from across the country to celebrate her Distinguished Service Award." His eyes burned into Mercer's face. "She belongs here more than anyone."
