Malcolm rose. "Please preserve the call, radio traffic, and both camera recordings."Voss glanced down at his chest. "They'll be uploaded.""Keep the original files."Harlan touched his own camera. Malcolm saw the movement but could not tell whether he had pressed anything."Mine will show what happened," Harlan said."Good," Malcolm answered. The sergeant's radio sounded again. The office had confirmed the agents' identities; Captain Miriam Ellis was on her way.Voss returned Malcolm's wallet and stepped toward the gate with Harlan. Malcolm heard the officer speak before they reached it: "Advancing with a metal object. That's why I cuffed him."Voss nodded once. "We'll document the threat and the release."Dana followed at a distance. "Document the witnesses, too.""I know how to write an incident," Voss said."Then include Mrs. Avery's explanation before the detention."He looked back toward Evelyn, but did not answer. At the table, Tessa finally stopped recording. Her fingers missed the button on the first try. "Uncle Malcolm..."He came over. "I almost turned it off.""You kept Grandma from falling.""Dana told me to keep filming. I thought I was making everything worse."Malcolm pulled out a chair for her. "You don't have to decide anything right now."She sat, but kept the phone in both hands. "Should I send it to everybody?""Keep the whole recording. We'll arrange a copy for whoever reviews this. You can keep your original."Tessa opened the video to check that it had saved. Evelyn's laugh sounded from the speaker, followed by Harlan's first command. She dragged the playback forward and stopped. On the small screen, Malcolm stood with his wallet beside his hip; the tongs were already on the shelf. Voss's voice came through clearly.Tessa looked toward the gate. "He gave the order, Uncle Malcolm.""Keep it saved," Malcolm said. "Tell the captain what you heard."Tessa looked toward the gate where Voss stood beside Harlan. "He's still here.""I'll sit with you if you want."She nodded and locked the phone.Captain Miriam Ellis entered the backyard minutes later. Harlan stepped toward her, but she held up a hand."You'll speak with me separately. Sergeant, wait by your vehicle."Voss started to answer."Separately," she repeated.Ellis asked Evelyn whether she could sit at the table. Evelyn moved the welcome home card aside. "You can. They never asked."The captain took out a notebook. "Tell me what happened from when you first saw them."Evelyn began with the walker. She described trying to explain the house, offering her identification, and hearing Harlan call her son a threat."Did you see the entire contact?""His back was toward me for part of it." Malcolm watched Ellis write that down, too. "But I heard him ask permission to get his wallet," Evelyn continued. "And I saw where he put those." She pointed to the grill shelf. "Please put my name in there. They kept asking him who we were."
