Marcus felt his pulse quicken. "The classified folders: three manila files plus the sealed packet. That's exactly the right weight."

"And the next compartment access?" Brooks scrolled down.

The next entry showed the impound yard 3 days later: Weight before access: 2.8 lb. Weight after access: 2.8 lb.

"No change. Nothing was removed at impound," Brooks said quietly. "Whatever disappeared happened during the original stop."

Marcus grabbed Danner's body camera transcript, flipping to the roadside search section. "We need the footage synced with these timestamps, frame by frame."

Brooks pulled up the video file, advancing slowly through Mercer's search. "There, 2:47:30. Mercer kneels beside your SUV."

On screen, Mercer reached into the compartment, clearly removing multiple items: his badge wallet first, then several thick folders.

"Keep watching," Marcus said. "What happens next?"

The camera followed Mercer as he examined the FBI credentials, but the angle shifted as Danner turned his head. For several seconds, Mercer moved outside the frame.

"He's walking somewhere," Brooks noted. "Camera picks him up again... there: 2:48:15."

Mercer reappeared in frame approaching his patrol car. His hands were empty now except for Marcus's badge wallet.

"Rewind that," Marcus demanded. "Before he disappears from camera."

Brooks backed up the footage. At 2:47:45, Mercer was clearly carrying something thick and rectangular in his left hand: a sealed manila envelope.

"That's federal property," Marcus said. "He's carrying classified materials toward his patrol vehicle."

Brooks compared timestamps: "Weight sensor shows the compartment becoming lighter at 2:47:33. Danner's camera shows Mercer walking with federal documents at 2:47:45—12 seconds later. Where's his patrol car parked?"

Marcus studied the camera angles, identifying the roadside positions: "Behind your SUV, outside Danner's camera range when Danner focuses on me."

"So Mercer removes classified materials from your vehicle, walks toward his patrol car carrying federal documents, and disappears from camera view for almost 30 seconds."

"Plenty of time to hide evidence in his vehicle." Brooks saved the synchronized files. "This isn't circumstantial anymore. We have precise weight measurements, timestamped video, and documented opportunity."

Marcus felt the first real surge of hope since the hearing. "Hollis claimed we couldn't prove when the materials disappeared. These logs prove exactly when."

"And Mercer's own report." Marcus grabbed the incident paperwork. "He lists everything he removed from my vehicle: badge wallet, registration papers, emergency equipment. No mention of any sealed envelope or classified folders."

"So he documented removing some items, but deliberately omitted others—federal materials that he had no legal authority to seize, materials that somehow ended up missing from evidence." Brooks closed her laptop. "We need federal prosecutors to see this immediately."

"Will they authorize a search of Mercer's patrol vehicle and departmental locker based on weight sensors, timestamped video, and his own incomplete evidence list?"

Brooks smiled grimly. "They'd be crazy not to."

Marcus gathered the synchronized evidence files. For the first time since the hearing, he felt justice moving in the right direction.

"Mercer thought destroying my vehicle would end this," he said. "Instead, every sensor and camera was recording his theft."

Brooks headed for the prosecutor's office. "Let's go show them what their star witness really did with federal property."

Marcus stood beside the federal investigators as they approached the police station's main entrance. Agent Brooks carried the sealed evidence files while two additional agents flanked them with search warrants. The morning sun reflected off the building's glass doors, but Marcus felt nothing warm about this moment.

"Remember," Brooks said quietly, "we control this completely now. Federal jurisdiction overrides their internal procedures."

Marcus nodded. After 3 days of being pushed around by Hollis and his department, having federal authority behind him felt like breathing again.

Inside, the desk sergeant looked up nervously. "Can I help you?"

Brooks displayed her credentials. "Federal investigators. We need Sergeant Mercer summoned immediately. Don't tell him why."

The sergeant reached for his radio, glancing between the agents and Marcus. "Sergeant Mercer to the front desk. Sergeant Mercer to the front desk immediately."

Marcus watched officers throughout the station pause their conversations. Something about federal agents always made local cops nervous.

Mercer appeared within minutes, strutting from the back hallway with his usual arrogant swagger. Then he saw Marcus standing with the investigators. His face went white.

"What is this?" Mercer demanded.

Brooks stepped forward. "Sergeant Mercer, we have federal warrants to search your assigned locker and patrol vehicle. You're not under arrest, but anything you say can be used against you."

"Search for what? This is harassment!"

Marcus stayed silent, letting the federal agents handle everything, but he caught Mercer's eyes and held them. No more roadside humiliation. No more lies in official reports.

"Your locker first," the lead investigator announced.

Mercer's hands shook as he provided his combination. "This is complete garbage. You won't find anything because there's nothing to find."

The investigator opened the metal door, revealing uniforms, equipment, and personal items. He pushed aside spare gear methodically. Then his hand stopped.

"What's this?"

Behind Mercer's backup radio, a manila envelope sat wedged against the locker's back wall. The investigator pulled it free, examining the official federal seal.

Marcus felt his pulse quicken. The envelope's serial number was clearly visible: FED-2847A.
