"Mr. Carmichael. Mrs. Carmichael. The plaintiff alleges that when he requested the final payment for the completed framing, you told him you would tie him up in court until his company went bankrupt. Is that correct?"

Richard slowly stood up, his knees knocking against the table. "Your Honor," he stammered, sweat pouring down his temples. "I... I don't recall using those exact words. I..." He swallowed hard, his eyes darting to Valerie's wrist, remembering the hot tea he had spilled on her. "Your Honor, please. About this morning in the garage... I didn't know—"

"You didn't know what, Mr. Carmichael?" Valerie asked smoothly, leaning forward. "That I was the judge presiding over your case?"

"Yes!" Richard gasped, clutching his chest. "If I had known—"

"If you had known I was a superior court judge, you would have treated me with respect?" Valerie's voice dropped, vibrating with a quiet, lethal fury. "Is that it, Mr. Carmichael? Respect is reserved only for those who hold power over you? Because from where I sit, true character is defined by how you treat the people you believe have none."

Arthur looked between his client and the judge, his brilliant legal mind finally putting the pieces together: the unauthorized parking spot, the altercation, the sudden, desperate urge to settle. Arthur's face flushed a deep crimson. He slowly stepped away from Richard, physically distancing himself from the catastrophic implosion of his own clients.

Brenda suddenly stood up, tears streaking her perfectly applied makeup. "Your Honor, please! My husband was just stressed! We've been under so much pressure with this development! We respect you, we truly do! We have many Black friends! We donate to charities—"

"Sit down, Mrs. Carmichael," Valerie commanded.

The air in the room instantly froze.

"Before you perjure yourself with any more patronizing fabrications, I suggest you remain silent."

Brenda collapsed back into her chair, sobbing into her hands.

Valerie turned her attention back to David. "Mr. Henderson, you did the work. You documented the delays. You acted in good faith while being subjected to predatory financial abuse. The court sees you. The court hears you."
