Over the next two days, Theo came back and wound the dial in tiny steps: a quarter turn at a time, with long rests between. Each time he let go, the dial settled back a little less, and the tick inside grew a little stronger, as if something old was slowly clearing its throat.Dr. Raman also made a phone call that week: she had worked with Dr. Helen Voss, curator at the Ashworth Museum of Industry and Invention, for years."I think you should come see something," she said. "And bring your best archivist."Meanwhile, Mrs. Ostrowski found something in the basement of the Historical Society: a donated box of letters from a Brannick family. In it was a 1913 letter from a young draftswoman named Nora Haldane to her sister.Emily read it standing up because she could not make herself sit. Nora wrote that Mr. Hartwell had told his board the new lock was entirely his own:

"A drafting room girl could not hold a patent," he had said, "and no one would believe otherwise. So I have signed it where only the lock will know," she wrote. "Tom says the bank will keep it safe until someone patient comes along."

Emily looked up, her eyes wet. "'Someone patient,'" she whispered.Mrs. Ostrowski took off her glasses and wiped them on her sleeve. "The letter says her brother-in-law, Thomas Ames, was the bank's assistant cashier. That's why her lock went to Brannick: he was hiding her work in plain sight."That meant the lock had not been forgotten by accident; it had been hidden on purpose in a small-town bank where nobody would think to look, by a woman who believed the right person would eventually come.On the 20th day, the morning came gray and still. News had traveled: Dolores Brannigan brought coffee; Walt Doyle arrived in his good coat; a reporter from the local paper stood by the gate; and Dr. Helen Voss stepped out of a rented car with a leather notebook and the weary eyes of a woman who had seen many false alarms.Garrett Stroud was there, too: he stood apart near his truck, arms folded, and he did not look like a man who expected to be impressed. The feed store cap from the auction stood a few feet behind him. A few of the people who had laughed that day had come back just to see how the joke ended.Marion squeezed her daughter's shoulder. "If it opens," she murmured, "it opens. If it doesn't, you still did something most grown-ups never do: you listened."Emily nodded, though her mouth was too dry to answer.Theo made the last quarter turn and stepped back: the dial held.Dr. Raman handed Emily a card with four positions in her neat handwriting. "It's your lock," she said. "Your hand."Emily read the card twice. Then she placed both hands on the dial and felt her heartbeat in her fingertips.
