Marshall turned back to the room. "This airline has a choice. What happened on Flight 714, that's who Skyane was. What happens from today forward, that's who Skyane will be. And I promise you this, no one will ever be dragged from a seat on my airline again."

The auditorium emptied slowly. People filed out in silence, heads down, hands in pockets, no one sure what to say to the person beside them. Gretchen Harlo was the last to leave. Two HR representatives flanked her through the lobby. She carried a small cardboard box, locker contents, a spare pair of shoes, a framed photo from her first year in uniform. Her name tag was still pinned to her chest. No one asked her to remove it. She didn't think to. At the front door, she stopped, turned around, looked back at the building she'd walked into for 18 years. Her lips moved, maybe a word, maybe nothing. And then she stepped into the afternoon sun. Nobody followed her. Nobody said goodbye.

That same afternoon, Marshall Fenton stood in the empty auditorium and made three phone calls.

The first was to Eugene Pratt. "Professor Pratt. Marshall Fenton, the man from seat 2A."

A slow, quiet laugh on the other end. "Well, I had a feeling that flight wasn't over."

Marshall offered him a seat on Skyane's newly formed ethics advisory board. Full voting power on all matters of passenger treatment, crew conduct, and company culture. "And one more thing, first class. Any Skylane flight for life. Seat 3A, your usual."

Eugene was quiet. "You know, I spoke up because it was right, not for a reward."

"I know. That's exactly why you're getting one."

The second call was to Amy Torres. She answered with a shaking voice. She'd been crying since the meeting. She tried to apologize for not speaking up on the plane, for standing in the galley holding a tray of champagne while a man was humiliated 3 feet away from her. Marshall let her finish every word.
