"I want to see some ID," Scott said, his voice shaky now.
Denise pulled out her state credentials—official government identification with her photo, title, and authority clearly displayed. Scott stared at it; his hands were actually trembling.
"Now," Denise said, her voice still calm, but with steel underneath, "I'm going to ask you a direct question, and I want you to think very carefully before you answer: why exactly am I being denied access to this facility?"
Silence. Neither Scott nor Daniel wanted to say it. But Denise already knew.
"Is it because I'm Black? Is that why you suddenly have a dress code problem? 'Cause I've been coming here for eight months, and this is the first time anyone said anything about what I'm wearing."
Scott tried to deny it. "No, no, it's not that at all."
"Then what is it?"
More silence.
"Here's what's going to happen," Denise said. "I'm going to file a formal complaint with the state athletic commission tomorrow morning. I'm also going to file a discrimination complaint with the state civil rights division. And I'm going to request a full audit of this facility's membership practices, including who gets denied entry and why."
Scott's face went from pale to white. "That's not necessary. This was just a misunderstanding."
