Axton asked him to read the highlighted charge from October 14 of the previous year. Gunnar stared at the page before admitting it was a $22,000 charge at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Axton then asked about the charge immediately below it, dated October 16. Gunnar answered quietly, "$15,000. Also at the Bellagio."

"Thirty-seven thousand dollars over a weekend," Axton said. "Could you explain how this expenditure contributed to the management of Ms. Harper's household? Were you purchasing a particularly expensive chandelier?" A few people in the gallery shifted. Gunnar laughed lightly, trying to make the question sound foolish.

He told Axton that Victoria was worth more than $50 million and that people in their social circle often spent heavily on travel and hospitality while cultivating business relationships. "I was networking on her behalf," Gunnar said. Axton repeated the word "networking" as though testing it. He then turned to a $14,000 purchase from a private jewelry boutique in Miami three months later.

Gunnar said the jewelry had been intended as gifts for corporate partners. Axton nodded as if accepting the explanation. "Mr. Roth, are you familiar with a woman named Chloe Sterling?" he asked. Cynthia rose immediately, objecting that the hearing was about finances, not gossip.

Axton turned to Judge Davis. Gunnar was asking the court for $4.5 million on the premise that he had responsibly managed marital assets and sacrificed his own life for Victoria, he explained. If money had instead been directed toward another relationship, that fact bore directly on the story Gunnar had placed before the court. Gunnar's smirk disappeared. He called Chloe Sterling an associate he had met through the real estate industry. Axton asked whether she had provided any service to Victoria's company. Gunnar said no. He also admitted that Chloe had provided no service to the household.

"Then why did you sign a lease for a luxury two-bedroom apartment in Chicago's Gold Coast entirely in Ms. Sterling's name using money withdrawn from the joint marital account?" Axton asked. A collective intake of breath moved through the gallery. Victoria remained completely still, although a shadow crossed her face.

Cynthia began flipping rapidly through her binders. She protested that she had not been given any lease agreement in discovery. "Tab seven, counsel," Axton said without looking at her. The document was there: a lease identifying Gunnar as guarantor, with rent of $6,000 per month and payments traceable to an account funded by Victoria.

Gunnar's face reddened. He insisted Victoria had always known he supported friends and that the marriage included broad discretion over personal spending. Axton asked whether that discretion included using Victoria's signature in connection with financing related to Chloe's apartment. Gunnar snapped that he had not forged anything.

He claimed that as the person managing household finances, he had power of attorney to sign certain documents on Victoria's behalf for administrative matters. Axton questioned how a secret apartment for Chloe could fit within legitimate household administration. Cynthia objected when the question shifted from the financial document toward the relationship itself. Judge Davis sustained the objection and ordered Axton to stay focused on the records.

"I don't know what you're implying," Gunnar said. Axton stepped closer. "Are you the sole managing member of a Delaware limited liability company known as Apex Ventures?"

For the first time that day, genuine fear appeared on Gunnar's face. The color drained from his cheeks, leaving him visibly pale. His fingers tightened around the witness rail, and he looked desperately toward Cynthia. She stared back at him with clear confusion because the name Apex Ventures had never appeared in the version of events her client had given her.

Gunnar stammered that he had several dormant LLCs left over from his real estate days and could not recall all of them. "You don't recall Apex Ventures?" Axton asked. "Let me refresh your memory." He told the court that Gunnar had not merely spent Victoria's money on a luxurious lifestyle.

According to the records, Gunnar had also used Victoria's name, assets, and strong credit profile as leverage while pursuing his own high-risk investments. Axton handed the folder to the bailiff. Gunnar's breathing became shallow as the exhibits were distributed. The confidence he had carried into the courtroom disappeared. He had demanded millions in alimony believing Victoria was the only spouse with meaningful financial power.
