“And you want me to what? Smile?”
Marcus looked toward Rachel.
“Tell him.”
Daniel noticed.
“Tell me what?”
Rachel took a long breath.
She lowered herself onto the sofa with the toddler in her arms.
“Sit down.”
“I’m fine standing.”
“Daniel.”
“No. Just tell me.”
Rachel looked at Marcus.
Marcus nodded once.
Then she looked back at Daniel.
“His name is Caleb.”
Daniel waited.
Rachel stroked the toddler’s curls.
“He is not my biological child.”
Daniel’s expression changed slightly.
He said nothing.
“He’s my sister Melissa’s son.”
Daniel blinked.
“Melissa?”
Rachel nodded.
Daniel knew Melissa.
Rachel’s younger half-sister.
They had never been particularly close.
Melissa had struggled for years with instability, bad relationships, and periods when nobody knew where she was.
Daniel had met her perhaps six times.
The last time had been shortly before he left.
“What does Melissa have to do with this?”
Rachel’s voice softened.
“Everything.”
She explained.
Melissa had become pregnant almost two years earlier.
The baby’s father left before Caleb was born.
Melissa tried to raise him herself, but things fell apart quickly.
She lost her apartment.
Then her job.
Then she began disappearing again.
Rachel helped when she could.
Marcus helped too.
Not because Caleb was his child.
Because Marcus worked with a community outreach program through his church and knew how to navigate emergency housing, childcare assistance, and social services.
Daniel slowly looked at Marcus.
Marcus gave him a tired expression.
“I helped her find resources.”
Rachel continued.
“About ten months ago, Melissa left Caleb with me for what she said would be one weekend.”
Daniel looked at the child again.
“She never came back?”
Rachel shook her head.
“Not for six weeks.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“When she finally returned, she wasn’t okay.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means she knew she couldn’t care for him safely.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
