No blue dress.

No dramatic jewelry.

She looked tired.

For a moment, Daniel saw the woman from the aquarium.

The woman who had once laughed while Emily pressed both hands against the shark tank glass.

Memory was cruel that way.

It preserved good moments long after they stopped making sense.

Claire sat across from him.

Four attorneys surrounded them.

Her lawyer began speaking.

Daniel interrupted.

“I want to hear from Claire.”

Mitchell Rowe frowned.

“I advise against direct—”

“I didn’t come here to negotiate with you.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

“What do you want me to say?”

“The truth.”

“I’ve been telling the truth.”

“You pushed Emily.”

“It was an accident.”

Daniel placed a printed still image from the security video on the table.

Claire looked at it.

“You’re judging half a second.”

“No. I’m judging what happened before and after too.”

“She was out of control.”

“She was six.”

“You don’t know what she was like when you were gone.”

The room became silent.

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“Tell me.”

Claire leaned forward.

“You were never there.”

Daniel absorbed the accusation because part of it was true.

“You traveled constantly. I handled everything.”

“You locked her in her bedroom.”

“She had tantrums.”

“For almost four hours?”

Claire looked toward her attorney.

Daniel continued.

“You told her I traveled because I needed breaks from her.”

“I never said that.”

“She says you did.”

“She’s a child.”

Daniel stared at Claire.

There it was.

The sentence beneath everything.

She’s a child.

As if that made Emily less credible.

Less important.

Less human.

Daniel leaned back.

“Yes.”

His voice was quiet.

“She is.”

Claire waited.

“And she depended on us.”

Claire looked away.

Daniel continued.

“She couldn’t leave. She couldn’t call an attorney. She couldn’t book a hotel room. She couldn’t drive somewhere safe. She had one job in that house.”

Claire looked at him.

“To trust the adults.”

Daniel felt his anger settle into something colder.

“And you used that against her.”

Claire’s face tightened.

“You think you were some perfect father?”

“No.”

The answer surprised her.

Daniel continued.

“I failed to see what was happening.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Exactly.”

“But my failure does not erase what you did.”

“I raised her while you built your empire.”

“You had staff.”

“I had a child who never accepted me.”

Daniel stared at her.

“She loved you.”

Claire’s expression flickered.

“You don’t know that.”

“I have videos of her making you birthday cards.”

“Children make cards.”

“She asked me to buy you a necklace because she heard you say you liked emeralds.”

Claire looked down.

“She called you Mom once.”

“Don’t.”

Her voice cracked.

Daniel stopped.

For the first time, Claire seemed genuinely emotional.
