“What the hell?”

“Stop moving.”

“Get off me!”

“If you stop trying to grab me, I will.”

His free hand started upward.

Naomi adjusted his arm.

He winced.

“Okay! Okay!”

She immediately released pressure.

Then stood.

No kick.

No insult.

No triumphant smile.

She moved backward and raised both hands.

The entire exchange had taken perhaps four seconds.

The branch manager finally rushed from her office.

“What happened?”

The man struggled onto one knee.

“She attacked me!”

Naomi ignored him.

She turned around.

Evelyn was still sitting near the wall with one hand on her shoulder.

Naomi crossed the room.

“You okay to stand?”

Evelyn nodded.

“I think so.”

Naomi offered her arm.

The elderly woman took it.

Naomi bent, gathered the papers that had fallen from Evelyn’s envelope, placed them carefully back inside, then walked her toward the teller window.

The man stood behind them breathing heavily.

“You’re just going to let her do that?”

The branch manager looked between him and Naomi.

“What exactly happened?”

“She threw me on the floor!”

Jordan spoke.

“You grabbed her.”

The man turned.

“I did not.”

Jordan’s face tightened.

“Yes, sir. You did.”

The construction worker added, “After you shoved the grandmother.”

“I didn’t shove anybody!”

Evelyn turned around.

Her voice was quiet.

“You nearly knocked me down.”

The man stared at her.

“You stepped into me.”

Evelyn looked at Naomi.

Then at him.

“I had a cane.”

Nobody laughed this time.

The branch manager, Melissa Grant, looked toward the ceiling camera.

“Everyone stay where you are.”

The man straightened his jacket.

“No. I’m leaving.”

Melissa stepped into his path.

“Sir, I need you to remain here while we review what happened.”

“You can’t detain me.”

“No. But bank security has already been contacted, and given the physical contact involving two customers, I’m asking you to remain voluntarily.”

He looked toward the exit.

Then at the cameras.

For the first time that morning, the confidence in his face weakened.

“My name is Charles Whitmore.”

Melissa nodded.

“I know.”

That surprised Naomi.

Charles noticed.

“You know?”

“You’re meeting with commercial lending.”

“Yes.”

“At ten.”

“Yes.”

Melissa glanced at the clock.

9:36.

Charles adjusted his cuffs.

“Then perhaps we can stop wasting time.”

Melissa’s expression cooled.

“Your meeting can wait.”

His face changed.

“You understand how much business my company does with this bank?”

Melissa did not answer.

Charles looked around as if expecting somebody to correct her.

Nobody did.

Naomi helped Evelyn to the counter.

Jordan stepped forward.

“Mrs. Porter, are you sure you don’t need medical attention?”

Evelyn smiled.

“No, sweetheart. I need to close my husband’s savings account.”

Jordan’s expression softened.

“Oh.”

Her husband, Frank Porter, had died nineteen days earlier.

That was why she carried the leather envelope.

Death certificate.

Marriage certificate.

Account information.

A handwritten list her daughter had made because grief had made simple administrative tasks feel impossible.

Evelyn had postponed the bank trip twice.

That morning she had finally come alone because she was tired of everyone treating her like she might break.

She had waited twenty minutes.

Then Charles Whitmore stepped in front of her because he had a meeting.

Naomi stood beside her while Jordan processed the paperwork.

She did not hover.

When Evelyn needed to sign, Naomi stepped aside.

When she had difficulty hearing one question, Naomi repeated it without embarrassment.

When Jordan finished, Evelyn folded the documents carefully and returned them to the envelope.

“Thank you,” she told him.

Jordan smiled.

“I’m sorry about what happened.”

Evelyn nodded toward Naomi.

“I’m not.”

Naomi laughed quietly.

Behind them, two bank security officers had arrived.

Charles was loudly explaining that he had been assaulted by a stranger.

One guard asked Naomi whether she would provide a statement.

She nodded.

“Of course.”

Charles pointed at her.

“You better believe I’m pressing charges.”

Naomi looked at him.

“That’s your decision.”

Her calm seemed to anger him all over again.

“You think you’re tough?”

“No.”

“You embarrassed me.”

Naomi glanced toward Evelyn.

“You did that yourself.”

That was the closest she came to insulting him.

Charles opened his mouth.

One of the security officers interrupted.

“Sir, please stop addressing her.”

The police arrived fourteen minutes later.

Not sirens.

Not a dramatic swarm.

Two patrol officers walked into the branch after bank security reported an altercation involving multiple customers.

Officer Denise Harper took Charles’s account.

Her partner, Miguel Alvarez, spoke separately with Naomi.

“Did you throw him?”

Naomi considered the wording.

“I redirected him after he grabbed my wrist.”

Miguel almost smiled.

“You have training.”

“Yes.”

“What kind?”

“Judo. Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Some defensive tactics.”

“For work?”

“Mostly teaching.”

That answer interested him.

“You own a gym?”

“A small one.”

“Were you trying to injure him?”

“No.”

“Why take him down?”

“He grabbed my wrist after nearly knocking an elderly woman over. I didn’t know whether he was going to keep escalating.”

“Did he hit you?”

“No.”

“Did you hit him?”

“No.”

“Did you continue restraining him after he stopped?”

“No.”

Miguel nodded.

“Any injuries?”

“My wrist is fine.”

He looked toward Charles.

“He’s saying shoulder pain.”

Naomi nodded.

“He landed on his side.”

“You willing to show me what you did?”

“Not on you.”

Miguel laughed.

“Fair.”

The security footage made the rest easier.

It showed Charles entering the queue at 9:24.

Evelyn had been standing there long before him.

It showed him bypassing the line.
