what Emma had said. "Responsible for what?" he asked. "For telling a child that her father might abandon her if she misses her mother?"

"Don't twist my words," Celeste snapped. Then she lowered her voice, as if softness could erase the anger. "I have opened my home to both of you. I gave your daughter a birthday she could never have had otherwise. And you're willing to humiliate me over a tarnished trinket?" Daniel glanced at the gold bracelet on Emma's wrist, the caterers, the luxury cars in the driveway. He understood why Celeste thought these were arguments she could win. For months he had answered with gratitude instead of disagreement. Now he could finally hear the condition beneath every gift: it was generous only if he accepted the price.

"Hannah's necklace is not a trinket," he said. "And Emma's memories are not a debt she owes you." Celeste looked around at her guests. "You're making a scene." "The scene started when you told my daughter her mother was something to be ashamed of." He made himself breathe slowly. "We're leaving." Celeste's expression hardened. "If you walk out of this party, don't expect to come back. I will not be treated this way in my own home." Daniel nodded once. "I understand."

For the first time, Celeste seemed unsure. She had expected him to apologize, or at least ask to speak privately. Instead, he walked to Emma, helped her fasten the silver necklace around her neck, and knelt to meet her eyes. "Would you like to go?" he asked. Emma touched the star. She looked at the cake, the bicycles, the glittering pile of gifts, and all the faces waiting for her reaction. "Can Aunt Lauren come?" she whispered. "If she wants to," Daniel answered. Lauren took Emma's hand. "There is nowhere I'd rather be."

Daniel turned toward the guests. He apologized for ending the party early and thanked them for coming. He did not explain Emma's private pain or ask anyone to choose sides. He collected the homemade strawberry cake from the kitchen, took the navy-blue box, and retrieved the paper stars from his truck. Emma insisted on carrying the necklace box herself. She left the expensive gold bracelet on the gift table beside Celeste's neatly stacked thank-you cards. No one stopped her. As they crossed the driveway, Celeste called after Daniel that he was throwing away the best opportunity he would ever have. He kept walking, not because he wanted to punish her, but because answering would mean asking Emma to spend another minute in a place where she had learned to be afraid.
