"He Paraded His Mistress Into Our Home With His Family's Blessing. So, I Drained Every Dime And..."

The day my husband brought his mistress home, I packed up my entire fortune and moved to Switzerland. When my husband announced he was going to live with his mistress, all eight members of his family agreed to it. Without causing a scene, I packed up my fortune and immigrated to Switzerland. Only when they saw my bank account balance at zero did their world come crashing down. Valerie, today is your birthday.

The whole family is here. We have something important to discuss with you. When I heard the voice of my mother-in-law, Phyllis, coming from the living room, I was in the kitchen cutting a cake. It was my 32nd birthday, and I had planned a quiet dinner just with my husband, Jason. I never imagined that all eight members of his family would show up unannounced.

I dried my hands and walked out carrying a fruit platter. And then I froze. Standing next to my husband, Jason, was a woman I had never seen before. She looked to be about 25. She wore a tight-fitting dress that revealed a slightly bulging belly, and she was clinging tightly to Jason's arm.

My father-in-law Anthony, my mother-in-law, Phyllis, my two sisters-in-law, Betty, and Sylvia, and my brother-in-law Michael with his wife Clare were all sitting on the sofas. They were watching the scene with complete normalcy as if this were the most natural situation in the world. "What is the meaning of this?" I managed to say, setting the fruit platter on the coffee table with trembling hands. "Valerie," Jason said.

His voice carried a confidence I had never heard from him before. "Meet Chloe. She's my girlfriend, and she's pregnant. It's a boy." I stood rooted to the spot.

I felt the blood turn to ice in my veins. A buzzing sound like thousands of bees drilled into my ears. My mother-in-law, Phyllis, cleared her throat and said, "Honey, as you know, you and Jason have been married for 5 years and haven't had any children. We can't let the Gallagher family name die out, can we? This girl, Chloe, is young and healthy, and she's given us an heir on the first try.

It's God's will." I stared blankly at Jason, the man I had met in college and loved for eight years. He avoided my gaze, but wrapped his arm around Chloe's shoulders, lifting his chin as if showing off a prized possession. "So, is this the reason you all came here today?" My voice sounded surprisingly serene.

My sister-in-law Betty let out a little laugh. "Sister-in-law, you still don't get it. Chloe is expecting my brother's child, so obviously she has to live in this house. Don't worry, you'll still be the primary wife. She's just here to give us the baby."

I looked around. Everyone's face bore an expression of total indifference. My father-in-law smoked his cigar, pretending not to hear anything. My two sisters-in-law exchanged glances as if watching an entertaining reality show. Even my brother-in-law and his wife, with whom I'd always had a closer relationship, kept their heads down, fiddling with their iPhones.

I understood everything. I nodded. The situation was so absurd, it was almost comical, so the reason the entire family had gathered on my birthday was to inform me that my husband in the middle of the 21st century had decided to take a concubine. "Valerie," my mother-in-law said, slamming her palm on the table. "Who do you think you're defying?"

For years, your womb has been empty while you held my son back. Chloe is going to give us a grandson. It's a blessing for this family. You either accept it or you pack your bags and get out of this house right now. I took a deep breath.

The pain of my fingernails digging into my palms was the only thing keeping me sane. Can I use the restroom for a moment? Without waiting for an answer, I went into the bathroom and locked the door. My face in the mirror was as pale as paper, and I had bitten my lips so hard it was almost bleeding. I turned on the faucet.

Under the cover of the running water, I cried silently. The tears fell onto the cold marble sink, shattering into tiny drops. Eight years of dating and marriage, 5 years of guilt for not being able to conceive absolute devotion. Because I wasn't born a Gallagher, I had worked like a dog for them. To them, I was nothing more than a breeding instrument.

If I couldn't conceive, I didn't deserve even the most basic human dignity. I washed my face and stared at myself in the mirror. After crying, strangely enough, my vision had become clearer. It wasn't that I hadn't noticed the changes in Jason over the last few years. I had simply wanted to believe in him.

Now, in retrospect, all his actions, the phone always in his hand, the excuses about working late, his growing coldness were glaring red flags. I dried my face and opened the cloud drive on my phone. A few months ago, I had backed up his iMessage history. Right there were the explicit conversations with Chloe, the numerous bank transfers he had made to her, and even a detailed plan on how to get me to ask for a divorce voluntarily. I smiled coldly.

I opened another folder. Inside were all the financial records I had been quietly compiling for years. Company stock certificates, property deeds, and information on various investment accounts. Jason, I whispered, looking at my reflection. You are going to regret this.

When I returned to the living room, all eyes focused on me. They expected me to break down in tears and screams. I would never give them that satisfaction. I've thought about it, I said calmly. Chloe can live here, but the master bedroom will remain mine.

She can use the guest room. Jason let out a sigh of relief. Chloe, however, pouted. But honey, you promised me you'd give me the master bedroom. For now, you'll be in the guest room, I interrupted.

Today is my birthday. At least until tonight is over. I am the lady of this house. My mother-in-law, Phyllis, nodded in satisfaction. Now that's how you talk.

"That's my daughter-in-law. Valerie, don't worry. When the boy is born, you'll be like a mother to him, too. Chloe is just a surrogate." I smiled and nodded.

But inside, I thought, surrogate? We'll see who is using whom. That night, as expected, Jason went to the guest room with Chloe. I was left alone in the massive bed in the master bedroom, tossing and turning without being able to sleep. At 2:00 a.m., I quietly got up and went to the home office.

I turned on my laptop and sent an email to Monica, a college friend who lived in Switzerland. Subject urgent. I need information on the requirements for the Swiss investor visa and the fastest methods to transfer assets. It's hard to talk on the phone. Contact me via email.
