Claire:

— Good.

— I want to give you something.

It was a box.

Inside: beanies, medical notes, a small treatment calendar.

Claire looked at it.

— Why?

— They're yours.

— I thought maybe you wouldn't want me to have them.

Claire touched a blue beanie.

The one Margaret bought the day she lost her hair.

— You can keep the calendar.

Margaret was surprised.

— Why?

— Because you were there too.

— I'm not going to rewrite that.

Margaret wept.

Claire:

— But I'm taking the beanie.

— Of course.

A pause.

— Do you think that one day…?

Claire:

— Don't ask.

Margaret nodded.

— Okay.

That was perhaps the first time she obeyed a boundary without asking for an explanation.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE EMAILS

A digital forensics specialist reviewed the devices.

Not for a thriller.

For evidence.

They reconstructed everything.

Margaret had accessed the tablet.

She created automated rules.

Claire's emails containing certain words—hospital, diagnosis, treatment, Margaret, trust—were rerouted to a hidden folder and subsequently deleted from the server.

She sent emails from David's account at times when she knew he was asleep.

She had also deleted sent items.

She temporarily blocked Claire's contact on an app following a phone restoration.

To David, she sent summaries from her own account: Claire is doing well. She's tired. She doesn't want you to return because of this. She says she prefers that you finish your assignment.

David believed her.

Why didn't he call directly?

He tried.

Three times.

One call rang while she was in treatment.

Another time Claire was asleep, and Margaret answered:

— She doesn't want to talk right now.

The third time:

Margaret:

— She's very emotional.

— She says she needs space.

David interpreted it as marital stress.

He pulled back too.

He didn't push hard enough.

Claire:

— Why didn't you?

— I thought you were angry because I left.

— I was.

— So…

— But that didn't mean I wanted months without speaking.

— I know.

There were voicemail messages.

Margaret had deleted them.

One was recovered.

David listened to it with Claire.

His own voice.

May.

— Claire, Mom says you're going through something medical, but you don't want me to ask. I don't know if you're angry with me or scared, or both. I love you. If you need me to come back, tell me clearly, and I'll try to do it. I can't promise dates, but I'll try. Please call me.

Claire cried.

— I never heard it.

David:

— I know.

— If I had heard it…
