‘He Still Talking About Her’: Devon Franklin Says He Struggled for a Year After Divorce While Meagan Good Took Steps to Move On
Spiritual leader DeVon Franklin embarked on a deeply personal journey of recovery and self-discovery after his marriage to Meagan Good came to an end in December 2021. The two, co-authors of The Wait: Daily Inspirations for Finding the Love of Your Life and the Life You Love, had been married for nearly a decade before announcing their separation.
In a candid appearance on Cam Newton’s “Funky Friday” podcast, Franklin shared details of the isolating year he spent reflecting and rebuilding his spiritual foundation after the split.
“I ended up living in a hotel for about a year by myself right there in West Hollywood, overlooking Sunset Boulevard,” Franklin said. “There was a chair that faced the boulevard, and I would just sit there looking out the window asking myself, ‘How did I get here?’”
Franklin revealed that even before the divorce was finalized, he knew something within him needed to change. The inner turmoil he experienced became a wake-up call to focus on his emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual health. He reflected that it’s easy to blame others, but growth begins with accountability.
“I had to retrace my steps,” he explained. “It’s very easy when you go through something to point to the other person and say, ‘What they didn’t do,’ but that doesn’t help anybody. I had to ask, ‘What did I do? What was my role here? What are my opportunities for growth?’”
During his year of solitude, Franklin worked closely with a therapist and a life coach, spent hours in prayer and journaling, and immersed himself in scripture. He said that acknowledging his pain rather than suppressing it became the turning point for his healing.
“I’m hurt,” he admitted, adding that pretending not to feel pain only delays true healing. He warned that “anything we deny becomes empowered to destroy us,” emphasizing that his willingness to confront his emotions directly was what helped him rebuild.
His vulnerability resonated with many who heard his story. Fans expressed admiration for his honesty, while critics questioned why he continued speaking about his ex-wife years after the breakup. The mixed reactions underscored the scrutiny that public figures face when sharing their personal struggles.
In later interviews, Franklin clarified that he does not view the end of his marriage as a failure, but rather as a part of a divine process of growth. He told one outlet that perhaps the marriage “did exactly what it was meant to do” and that the experience helped him deepen his faith and compassion for others (source: Essence, BET).
While Franklin sought solace and healing, Meagan Good was also redefining her life after the split. In an interview with xoNecole Magazine, the actress shared that she purchased her first home following the divorce—a milestone she found especially meaningful after years of living a transient lifestyle since age 15. She described decorating the space herself and finally feeling grounded after decades of uncertainty.
Good admitted that 2022 brought unexpected challenges and was perhaps the first time in her adult life when she truly didn’t know what was next. Yet she chose to embrace that uncertainty with optimism, calling it “pretty freaking wonderful” and describing the experience as one of renewal and faith (source: xoNecole, Atlanta Black Star).
In a separate interview, Good confirmed that it was Franklin who initiated the separation. Despite her heartbreak, she said she holds no bitterness and no regrets.
“It’s not that anybody did anything wrong,” she explained. “We both have done a lot of healing and a lot of growth. There’s nothing I regret about my marriage or the person I married” (source: People Magazine).
Since their separation, both Franklin and Good have moved forward into new chapters of their lives. In August 2025, Franklin married fitness coach Maria Castillo after an eight-month engagement (source: People Magazine). Meanwhile, Good found love again with actor Jonathan Majors, and the two’s relationship has drawn significant media attention (source: USA Today, BET).
Professionally, both have continued to thrive. Franklin has remained active in faith-based media, including a Netflix collaboration with Tyler Perry titled Ruth & Boaz. He also continues to speak at conferences about emotional resilience, faith, and the lessons learned from loss. Good, for her part, starred in Tyler Perry’s 2024 drama Divorce in the Black, a film that mirrors some of her real-life experiences and allowed her to process her emotions through art.
Whether viewed as courageous transparency or excessive vulnerability, Franklin’s decision to speak openly about his healing journey has sparked ongoing conversation. Some believe his honesty offers comfort to others navigating heartbreak, while others wish he would look forward instead of revisiting the past.
Either way, both DeVon Franklin and Meagan Good stand as examples of individuals who chose grace, accountability, and self-discovery in the aftermath of public heartbreak—each forging a new sense of peace and purpose on their own terms.
