He set the tablet on the kitchen island and played the video without speaking. Her face changed as the footage moved from the box to the album to the false fall. She tried to stop it, saying he shouldn't be watching private moments without asking her. He didn't answer. When the clip reached the part where I offered to show him the camera, she looked away.

"Did Jordan touch you?" he asked.

She said he had frightened her. Dad asked again. She told him I had been threatening for months, that the family could never be peaceful while I lived there, and that perhaps the recording didn't show how I made her feel. Those things were not the question. Dad asked a third time, slower: "Did my son touch you?"

"No," she said at last, so quietly that he almost didn't hear it. "But you don't understand what it's like having him judge me in my own home. I thought if he left, we could finally be a family."

Dad closed the tablet. "We were already a family," he replied. "You asked me to remove my son from it. And I did."

Vanessa began crying again. This time he did not move to comfort her. He told her he needed distance, that she should stay with her sister as planned, and that they would discuss their marriage with professional advice rather than another argument. He didn't pretend she could be removed from the house or the marriage by one angry sentence. He simply refused to continue the conversation while she was still trying to justify the lie. After she left, he sat alone in the living room until morning, surrounded by furniture that suddenly seemed much less important than the son he had sent away.

He called me at 7:12 the next morning. I knew the time because I had started noticing everything connected to that house. The phone vibrated on Denise's kitchen table while I was eating cereal from one of her chipped bowls. For a long moment I watched his name and couldn't make myself touch it. When I finally answered, he sounded older than he had three days before. "Jordan," he said, "I watched the camera."

I set down the spoon. "And?"

"You were telling the truth. I saw it all. Vanessa admitted you never touched her." There was a pause. "I am so sorry, son."

I had imagined hearing those words. In my imagination I felt immediate relief, maybe even happiness. In real life, the first thing I felt was anger. "I told you the truth while I was standing right in front of you," I said. "You needed a camera to believe me."

He didn't argue. That made it harder, in a way. "You're right," he said. "I can't explain that away. I want to bring you home."

I looked around Denise's kitchen, at the clean counter, the little stack of library books, the place where she had cleared a drawer for my clothes. "I don't know if that's my home right now," I said. "I can't do this over the phone." He said he understood and asked
