Now they proved that I was innocent and they tried getting the truth out of Karen, but she kept insisting that she was in the right and that I was the insane one here. From what I heard, she started insulting the police officers since they were starting to turn on her and believe my side of the story.
Eventually, Karen was charged with trespassing and attempted burglary because of the crowbar and her attempt to break into my car. Sadly, she didn't spend any time in jail, though. Just paid a fine and was released.
Now, here's where you think the story would end, but no, it only got worse. The story spread around the neighborhood. Everyone's business is frankly everywhere, so I was not surprised by it, but I had only told a few people. I didn't really care if anyone knew since it was not like the situation was embarrassing for me or that I was in the wrong or something, but I was just surprised at how quickly it had all spread.
Because of the embarrassment from that whole incident, whatever problem Karen had with me only escalated even further. She began sending me violation notices for things I didn't even do, claiming my grass was over 4 inches tall when I had literally just mowed it to about 2.5 inches. That my car was parked incorrectly when it was fine, charging me fines for noise violations that didn't even exist. The violations were constant and ridiculous. And when I tried to approach the HOA board about it, Karen just sent me more violation notices with made-up infractions. She was essentially creating fake violations to fine me constantly and separate from the regular HOA dues that everyone pays.
I saved all the papers and notices she gave me and cross-referenced them with actual HOA bylaws and rules. I even compared them to violation notices other neighbors had received in the past, and it was obvious that she was inventing new fees and infractions just to target me out of spite.
At some point, she had trespassed again. This was less intense than the first time, though. What happened was I was in my backyard and my backyard has grass. So, of course, I was taking the time to mow the grass because I didn't want any overgrowth. And in the middle of my mowing session, I started hearing yelling from behind me. It was Karen.
Mind you, I have a big fence that prevents people from getting into my backyard. But to be fair, I had it unlocked because I just mowed the front lawn as well. But that didn't give her a right to walk onto my property and start yelling at me uninvited. She yelled at me that I was being too loud and that I was violating HOA policy for doing so. Our HOA does have a policy against loud noises, but it was not like I was mowing my lawn at 3:00 in the morning. It was 2:00 in the afternoon on a Saturday, which is a completely reasonable time to mow your lawn in my opinion.
However, this time I pulled out my phone and started recording her, and I threatened to call the cops on her for trespassing again. That managed to get her off my property pretty quickly.
At this point, however, Karen's harassment had been going on for 2 months since the break-in incident, and I decided that I finally had enough. My parents were stressed out by this situation, too, since we were constantly dealing with these bogus violation notices, and Karen was practically targeting our entire household by now.
Luckily, I was already one step ahead. So, I'd recorded the encounter I had with Karen in my backyard and had been keeping all the mail violation notices and letters that Karen had been sending us. As mentioned before, I'd already been keeping records of these fake violations and fines since I had legitimate notices from before the incident and could compare them to what she was sending me now.
I decided to let Karen do her thing for one more month just to build up even more evidence before I finally gathered my case. I decided to file a formal harassment complaint with the police. Since I had all of my necessary documentation, the video recording, the violation notices, the comparison showing the made-up fees, and the police station was already aware of the stuff Karen would pull, the police were pretty quick to take it seriously and actually do something about it. They had already been approached by other residents who said they were experiencing similar targeted attacks by Karen. Multiple people in the neighborhood had filed complaints about her behavior.
