Then at the next HOA board meeting—one neither Rosalind nor I attended because Wren had a follow-up appointment—Beverly moved to issue a second violation. She framed it in the meeting minutes as a "health and safety concern." The minutes were public record; the language was surgical.
I knew because our neighbor, Thaddeus Brumfield—everyone called him Tad—had been there. Tad was a retired railroad engineer who'd lived in Sycamore Crest for twenty-two years. He stood about 6'3", weighed 250, and had a voice like a diesel engine idling through a tunnel. When Tad said something quietly, three houses heard it. When he said something loudly, the Harlo County weather station probably logged it as atmospheric interference.
Tad called me that evening, read me the minutes word for word. Then he said, "You know she's done this kind of thing before, right?"
