"Dear," she said gently. "I want to apologize for—"

"All of that."

"All of what?" I asked, even though I knew exactly what she meant.

She waved her hand vaguely in the direction of the neighborhood. "The circus, the hysteria, the Beverly of it all."

I stifled a laugh. Even she was calling it that. "I didn't participate," she continued. "लेकिन I watched from my window, and I saw how you handled yourself. You were patient. You were calm. You didn't treat anyone badly. That woman," she paused, "has been a thorn in this community for years. I'm glad someone finally stood up to her."

She pressed the flowers into my hands. "For you," she said, "and for that nice girl who works with you. I hope things calm down now."

I thanked her, genuinely touched. She left with a smile, and for a moment, everything felt peaceful.

But peace is fragile when your business sits on the border of an HOA war zone.

By midafternoon, my district manager, Bradley, returned. Though this time, he didn't storm inside like a corporate thundercloud. Instead, he hesitated at the doorway, cleared his throat, and approached the counter with the cautious humility of someone attempting an apology.

"Mark," he said. "I, uh, heard about what happened."

"You were here this morning," I reminded him.

"Right," he said quickly. "लेकिन I heard what the mayor said, and the sheriff, and pretty much the entire town." He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. "I may have overreacted earlier, and I shouldn't have threatened suspension before hearing your side."

I nodded slowly, letting him stew in it. He'd earned a little discomfort.

"As a gesture of goodwill," he continued, sliding an envelope onto the counter, "the company wants to offer you a bonus for maintaining professionalism during a public incident. And because corporate saw the livestream..."

I blinked. "Corporate saw the livestream?"

"Oh, yeah," he sighed. "It's trending on the local subreddit, too."
