The email went out at 6:02 the next morning. Tuesday. It came to every household in Meadowlark Commons, from the official Association address, with the bird on the fencepost at the top, and the subject line was IMPORTANT: Safety Incident at Summer's End Splash.

Dear Neighbors,

As many of you are aware, a serious safety incident occurred at yesterday's event in which an unlicensed minor administered an injection of an unidentified substance to a young child on Association property without the consent of the child's guardian. While the child is now recovering, this incident raises grave concerns about the presence of sharps, needles, and unapproved medical devices in our shared amenities, a concern this Board has previously raised with the family involved.

Pending a full review, the amenity privileges of the household involved have been suspended. The Board will also be reviewing Rules 9.2 and 11.4 to ensure they are being enforced consistently and that our community remains a safe place for all our children.

Please direct any questions to the management company. We ask that residents refrain from speculating on social media out of respect for the families involved.

Warmly,

Verlene Quisenberry

President, Meadowlark Commons HOA

I'd like to say I read it calmly. What actually happened is that I read it standing up, and then I went out to the garage, where I keep a stack of blank MDO panels for the shop, and I took down a four-by-eight, the biggest I had, and laid it across two sawhorses, and I got out a quart of One Shot fire red and my widest flat, and I stood there for I don't know how long with the brush in my hand, deciding what I was going to paint on it and where in the subdivision I was going to put it. I had some ideas. I'd lettered for thirty years. I could make a sign that people would read from a moving car at forty miles an hour and remember for the rest of their lives. I knew exactly how big her name would need to be.
