Astrid pointed toward the hinge. "Proceed."
Her pressure only pushed the timing. The instruction Kira relied on was Pinnacle's defective operational release, not Astrid's command.
The operator started the tool cycle. The first impact was sharp. Metal struck metal at the bottom of the hill. The steel hinge guard folded inward around the fastener. The gate camera timestamp read exactly 4:28:16.
The gate shuddered. It stayed closed.
Declan turned at the sound. "Hold."
His shout crossed the road while the impact tool was already cycling. The operator reset against the mounting point in one quick movement. Tool noise swallowed part of Declan's warning. His radio hold still had not reached the subgroup's access channel as a received command.
Astrid was closer. "Finish it," she said.
The operator had already started the second motion. The blow cracked the control housing beside the keypad. It pulled away from the post and hung by a narrow strip of wire. The timestamp read exactly 4:28:19.
Then the subgroup's access radio sounded. "All access personnel, temporary hold," Declan broadcast. "No further contact with the gate until scope is authenticated."
Kira stopped immediately. She raised a closed fist. Every member of the subgroup stepped back. The operator killed the tool.
The bolt cutters stayed open beside the chain. The pry bar came away from the hinge. The impact tool hit the pavement with a heavier clatter as the last SUV stopped in its final position. For several seconds, the three different metal sounds carried along the road. The impact tool's motor wound down. Then only idling engines and radio static remained.
The other guards began stepping back into their functional groups. Traffic cones remained long enough to protect the open lane. Cameras stayed on.
Astrid turned on Declan. "Now the gate is compromised. You cannot leave a security obstruction half removed. Lift the hold."
"The hold stays until central confirms authority," Declan said.
The gate remained closed. Inside the post, a sensor had measured force above the attempted breach threshold. The second impact verified the physical contact. The controller activated the silent alarm automatically.
There was no siren and no flashing light. An encrypted alert went to Shawn and me. Verified physical impact. Residential perimeter response active.
For a moment, I saw the response as if I were back at my old operations table: north approach, service road approach, vehicle spacing, contact positions. I knew where I would send the first SUV and which angle I would reserve for Shawn. The urge to call him and retake command was almost physical.
Then I looked past the garage windows toward the rear of the house. Grace, Kate, and Finn were waiting because I had told them we had a plan. Shawn was moving because I had given him control of it.
My phone rang. "Impact verified," Shawn said. "Five SUVs responding from existing coverage positions. No road intercept. Open withdrawal lane preserved."
The decisions were already his. "Follow your plan," I said.
I ended the call and stayed inside my property line.
Declan waited for central control to authenticate the scope record. Kira's subgroup remained back from the damaged gate with its equipment under control. Astrid stood near the broken keypad, demanding that Declan turn the temporary hold into permission to continue.
Then the first unmarked black SUV appeared at the far bend. Almost at the same moment, a second turned in from the service road direction. The two SUVs slowed before they reached the gate. Neither crossed toward Pinnacle's vehicles.
The first stopped on the shoulder beyond the damaged control post. The second settled near the service road turn, far enough back to keep the center of the road open. Three more appeared over the next minute.
Shawn placed them in a controlled arc along our property edge and lawful roadside space. The last driver held short of the open lane. Every Pinnacle vehicle could still leave. So could an ambulance or fire engine if a real emergency arrived.
Plain-clothes agents stepped out with empty hands visible. Green indicators came alive on their body cameras. No one displayed a weapon or approached Kira's subgroup.
Shawn approached only as far as the exterior edge of our property line. "Field Chief Fairfax."
Declan kept one hand near his radio. "Identify yourself."
"Shawn Drummond. Authorized protection detail for this occupied residence. We received a verified impact alarm at 4:28. Our cameras are active, and the withdrawal lane is open. We are asking Pinnacle to complete the scope check already pending through your command channel."
It was not a demand that Pinnacle surrender the road. Shawn was asking the company to answer its own question.
Astrid stepped around the hanging control housing. "These vehicles have nothing to do with Fox Hollow security. Remove them and finish the gate."
Shawn looked at Declan, not her. "The resident denied consent on camera. This is an occupied private home. Has forced entry authority been confirmed?"
"The temporary hold remains in effect," Declan said.
"Then we will remain outside your working area while you authenticate it."
Astrid pointed toward the bolt cutters resting against the chain. "You have a valid emergency order from the client representative. He brought private guards here to intimidate you into abandoning it."
"They have not entered our line or blocked our withdrawal," Declan said. "And your client code does not answer the scope question."
His radio clicked. "Field Chief Fairfax, central control. Confirm no further contact with the barrier."
"Confirmed. Temporary hold established after two impacts. Residence occupied. Owner refusal recorded. Standby for authenticated compliance finding."
The fifth SUV eased toward its final position, clear of the open lane. Its driver remained behind the wheel. Shawn's agents held where they were, cameras running and hands visible. No one closed in on Declan.
The pressure came from the damaged gate and the records moving through his own radio. Central control opened the current scope matrix, not the stale operational route. The address resolved to our residence. Pinnacle's current service boundary ended at the common road. The account also displayed the no-consent notice Nia had acknowledged 5 days earlier.
