"No, she reassured me everything was handled," one board member insisted.

"Handled?" whispered another. "Did you see her last night? She practically bolted out of the hall."

"She's under a lot of pressure."

"That doesn't excuse—"

He tuned out the rest. This wasn't the time to react; it was simply information, confirmation of the cracks forming.

As he moved toward the side door, a familiar voice stopped him. "So, you're everywhere this morning."

He turned slowly. She stood with her arms crossed, posture tight, tension radiating beneath her polished exterior. Her blazer was immaculate, but her eyes gave her away: red-rimmed, restless, watching the room for threats like someone accustomed to control slipping through her fingers.

"Maintenance starts early," he said evenly.

She forced a smile. "You caused quite a disruption last night."

"No," he replied calmly. "I asked a question."

Her smile wavered. "Your tone was inappropriate, and your insinuations were—"
