"Deputy, cuff him. That generator is HOA property."

Vanessa's voice carried across my equipment yard while two contractors waited beside a flatbed trailer, lifting straps already laid near the diesel unit.

Sheriff Reeves looked at me, then at the asset sheet in her hand.

I didn't argue. I opened my jacket slowly and reached for my credentials.

Vanessa laughed. "His job has nothing to do with this."

I nodded. "She's right. That's why you need the serial number."

Sheriff Daniel Reeves opened the credential wallet and studied it for a second. "Deputy US Marshal."

"That's right."

Vanessa Grant folded her arms across her crimson red blazer. "Then he should know better than to keep stolen property."

I took the wallet back and slipped it inside my jacket. "My job isn't evidence of ownership." That was the last thing I intended to say about the badge.

The machine sat on a concrete pad beside my equipment barn: a 125 kW industrial diesel standby generator with faded beige housing, a steel exhaust stack, and twenty years of ranch dust settled into every seam. It had been part of the place so long that Luis and I barely noticed it unless the power went down.

The contractors noticed it. They had backed a flatbed into the yard and positioned a compact crane truck behind it. Lifting straps were already on the ground. They had not come to inspect anything; they had come to take it.

Reeves looked at the contractor supervisor. "Nobody touches the machine until I understand the complaint."

Vanessa opened a black portfolio and produced two pages. "This is association equipment," she said. "Emergency Generator B. It was purchased during the original development phase and has been missing from our inventory for years."

Reeves read the first page: Fixed Asset Register

Emergency Generator B

Asset No: 04-2017

Acquired: Original Development Phase

Status: Reserve Field Storage

The second page authorized a contractor to recover and transport the unit.

Reeves looked up. "Mr. Cole, how long has this generator been here?"

"More than twenty years."

Vanessa gave a short, humorless laugh. "That doesn't make it yours."

"No," I said, "it doesn't."

That seemed to surprise her.
