She didn't answer.
And then the investigator delivered the line that changed everything: "You might want to call your management company," he told her calmly.
Karen grabbed her phone quickly. "Why?"
He looked straight at her. "Because by the time this report is filed, their license to operate in this state might be suspended."
Karen's hand started shaking. But that wasn't even the worst part.
Because at that exact moment, three of my neighbors walked over from across the street, and one of them said something that made Karen's situation ten times worse: "Officer, you might want to hear what she did last month, too."
Karen slowly turned toward the neighbors like someone had just pulled the ground out from under her. "What are you talking about?" she snapped.
The man who spoke first stepped a little closer. It was Mike, the guy who lived across the street from me. He looked at the police officer, then at the investigator. "Officer, this isn't the first time she's done something like this."
Karen shook her head immediately. "That's not true."
Mike ignored her. "Last month she tried to tow my wife's car from our driveway," he said. "Said the color violated community appearance rules."
The police officer blinked. "The color?"
"Blue," Mike replied flatly.
The tow truck driver behind us actually laughed out loud this time. Karen's face turned bright red.
"That vehicle was parked improperly," she argued.
Mike folded his arms. "It was in our driveway."
The investigator wrote something down again.
Then another neighbor stepped forward—Mrs. Alvarez from the corner house. "She came into our backyard, too," she said. "Through the side gate."
Karen turned toward her fast. "You had an unapproved shed!"
Mrs. Alvarez shook her head. "It's a children's playhouse."
The police officer looked between everyone. "Ma'am," he said to Karen, "how many properties have you entered without permission?"
Karen looked like she was about to explode. "This neighborhood would fall apart without enforcement!"
The investigator spoke calmly. "That's not your authority."
Karen pointed at him. "You're blowing this out of proportion!"
