"Their own belongings into a home they legally own."
Judith's chin trembled. "I was trying to protect this neighborhood."
"From what?" Trent asked.
She didn't answer.
Garland returned from the patrol car with a printed form. "Mrs. Pennington, I'm issuing you a formal citation for filing a false police report. This is a misdemeanor charge. Depending on the district attorney's review, additional charges may be filed, including a potential civil rights violation based on the circumstances of today's incident."
Judith took the form with shaking hands. The paper rattled against her fingers. "This can't be happening," she whispered.
"Mr. Cranston!" Garland raised his voice toward Ed, who had stopped halfway up his own walkway. "I'll need a formal statement from you as well. You told Mrs. Pennington you witnessed an assault. If that statement was knowingly false, you may also face charges."
Ed turned around. His face was gray. "I want to speak with a lawyer first."
"That's your right." Garland handed him a card. "We'll be in touch."
The officers stayed for another 40 minutes. They photographed the property and reviewed the intact glass panel. They documented Judith's scraped knee against her claim of being violently shoved. Franklin provided the deed, the closing documents, and his city identification. Everything checked out in under five minutes.
Before leaving, Garland approached Franklin one final time. "Mr. Mayor, for what it's worth, I'm sorry this happened. No one should have to prove they belong in their own home."
Franklin shook his hand. "Thank you, Sergeant."
The patrol cars pulled away from the curb. The street was empty. Every door on Maple Ridge Court was closed. Every curtain was drawn.
Denise sat down on the porch steps and pulled Bruno into her lap. The dog licked her face. She held him tight and didn't say a word.
Franklin sat beside her. He put his arm around her shoulders and looked out at the quiet, empty street. Their first day in their new home was over.
The story broke on Monday morning. A reporter at the local news station had picked up the police report over the weekend. The headline ran at 6:00 a.m.: HOA President Files False Trespassing Report Against City's Mayor and His Wife.
