I gathered the folder, shut down the laptop, and stood in the middle of the empty hall. The silence pressed close, but I welcomed it. It was the silence before a storm, and I was ready to bring it crashing down.

The night before the board meeting, the air in the neighborhood felt heavy, like the hush before a storm. Porch lights glowed across manicured lawns, but few people lingered outside. Curtains shifted as I walked past, neighbors glancing out, but not daring to step onto the street. They all knew tomorrow's meeting wasn't going to be another petty debate about landscaping or fence colors. Something bigger was about to break, and the silence said they could feel it, too.

I carried the folder under my arm as I crossed to the community hall. The doors were unlocked for setup, the faint smell of dust and floor wax clinging to the air. Inside, folding chairs were already stacked against the wall, waiting to be lined up for the audience. The long table where the board sat had been pushed into place at the front, its surface gleaming under the harsh lights.

I set my folder down at one end of the table, the echo of its weight bouncing off the bare walls. One by one, I pulled out the documents—Claudia's violation notice, Thomas's directive, the marked statutes—and laid them in sequence. The pattern was clear to me, but soon it would be clear to everyone else. The screen at the back of the room glowed faintly as I connected the projector, testing the feed again. The court seal shimmered on the wall, waiting.

The click of the door broke the quiet. I turned to see Thomas step inside, cap low, his eyes scanning the room before they settled on the documents. He didn't come closer at first, just hovered by the doorway like he wasn't sure he should be here. Finally, he walked in, his boots striking the floor in measured steps.

"You're really going to do this in front of everyone?" he asked. His voice was low, his expression unreadable.

"It's the only way it matters," I said. "If it happens in the dark, she'll spin it as rumor. But if it happens under these lights, with everyone watching, there's no way back for her."

He nodded slowly, eyes flicking toward the screen. "And the judge? Ready?"

"He'll join the moment she claims authority she doesn't have."
