The woman behind the front desk looked at Naomi Grant for less than three seconds before deciding she did not belong there.

Naomi noticed.

She had spent most of her adult life noticing things people assumed she missed.

The quick glance at her black sneakers.

The second look at the simple zip-up jacket she wore over matching black pants.

The eyes that moved from Naomi to the little boy holding her hand, then toward the revolving doors behind them as if waiting for an explanation.

The lobby of the Ashford Grand Hotel gleamed around them.

White marble floors stretched beneath enormous circular chandeliers. Brass fixtures reflected warm afternoon light. Guests crossed the lobby pulling designer luggage while a pianist played quietly near the cocktail lounge.

Naomi’s seven-year-old son, Jordan, looked upward.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“That light is bigger than our dining room.”

Naomi followed his eyes toward the chandelier.

“It probably is.”

“Can we have one?”

“No.”

Jordan considered that answer.

“What if I save my allowance?”

Naomi smiled.

“You would need approximately six hundred years.”

Jordan frowned.

“That’s too long.”

“Much too long.”

He squeezed her hand as they approached the reception desk.

Behind it stood a woman in her early forties wearing a charcoal hotel blazer with a gold name badge.

CLAIRE – GUEST SERVICES MANAGER.

Claire was typing when Naomi stopped in front of her.

She continued typing.

Naomi waited.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Finally Naomi said, “Good afternoon.”

Claire finished whatever she was doing before looking up.

“Yes?”

“I’m checking in.”

Claire’s expression did not change, but Naomi saw the skepticism immediately.

“Do you have a reservation?”

“Yes.”

“Name?”

“Grant.”

Claire placed her fingers on the keyboard.

“First name?”

“Naomi.”

Claire typed.

Jordan leaned against the desk and tried to see the computer.

His mother gently pulled him back.

“Give her some space.”

“Sorry.”

Claire searched.

Then her eyes narrowed slightly.

She typed again.

Naomi waited.

Claire looked at her.

“I don’t see anything.”

Naomi remained polite.

“It should be there.”

“Did you perhaps book another property?”

“No.”

“There are several Ashford hotels in the city.”

“I know.”

“This is the Ashford Grand.”

“I know where I am.”

Claire smiled in a way that contained no warmth.

“I’m simply trying to help.”

Naomi nodded.

“And I appreciate that.”

Claire searched again.

Jordan looked around the lobby.

“Mom, is this where Grandma used to work?”

Claire’s fingers stopped for half a second.

Naomi looked down at her son.

“A long time ago.”

“What did she do?”

“We’ll talk about it later.”

Claire glanced from Jordan to Naomi.

Then back to the screen.

“I still don’t have a Naomi Grant.”

Naomi reached into her bag and pulled out her phone.

“I have the confirmation email.”

Claire sighed softly.

Not loudly enough to be openly rude.

Loudly enough to be understood.

Naomi found the email.

“Reservation number 81742AG.”

Claire entered it.

This time something appeared.

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.
