I felt a flash of white-hot anger, a surge of adrenaline that wanted to scream and shout, to demand to know who, to demand to know why. But a colder, more devastating thought cut through the rage: She's not worth it.My face remained a mask of stone."And I know what you're thinking," she continued, her voice gaining a sickeningly self-righteous tone. "You're thinking that this is your fault, that you weren't enough. But this isn't about you. You're a great guy, Mark. You're stable. You're so kind. But that's the problem: you're a rock. I need someone who moves, who understands the way a creative life works. I need a man who is a reflection of my own ambition. Alex gets it."The smugness was so thick you could cut it with a knife. She was doing this with an air of superiority, as if she were a benevolent god granting me the truth of my own insignificance. She thought I would beg, that I would plead with her to reconsider. She thought I would collapse, giving her the emotional validation she craved to justify her terrible actions."This is a cosmic connection," she said, her voice dropping to a theatrical whisper. "We're soulmates. I'm just so, so sorry that you couldn't give me what I needed."I took a slow, deliberate breath, and something inside of me clicked into place. The anger, the pain, the betrayal—I felt it all, but I refused to let it show. She wanted a big emotional scene, and I wasn't going to give it to her. She wanted me to be a victim, and I refused to play the part.My voice was calm, steady, and utterly detached. It was the voice of a man signing a document and walking away:"Okay."I said a single word. My gaze was fixed on a spot just over her shoulder. "I wish you luck."She just stood there, speechless. Her smug expression had been replaced with one of shock, as if a script had been thrown off a teleprompter. She was waiting for the emotional outburst, the tears, the confrontation. She was waiting for me to validate her narrative that she was worth begging for.I didn't say another word. I simply turned and walked into the bedroom.
