Lena wiped her eyes quickly on her sleeve before Annie could catch her looking. Margaret leaned over, her voice thick. "That's exactly how it starts, Lena."

Charles did not clap the loudest in the room, but his movements were steady and deliberate. He clapped like a man who had invested capital into a foundational structure and was watching it grow exactly according to the blueprint.

Backstage, Annie ran straight into Lena's arms, her face warm. "I didn't fall down, Mama!"

Lena laughed through her tears, pulling her close. "No, you didn't. Not once."

"Did you see the final turn?"

"I saw every single step, baby."

Margaret hugged her next, handing her a juice box. "You were better than half the adults I've seen attempting to dance at weddings, sweetheart." Annie grinned widely.

Charles approached them last, waiting until Annie finished speaking with Daniel and Caroline before taking a step into the circle. "You looked very calm out there, Annie," he said.

"I wasn't calm inside," Annie answered candidly.

"That is exactly what calm is," he said. "Moving through the space anyway."

Annie thought about that statement seriously, then nodded once, as if filing it away to remember permanently.

The ride home that night felt different from every other trip they had taken. Annie leaned heavily against Lena's side on the leather seat, half asleep, her head resting securely on her mother's shoulder, her dance bag at her feet. Margaret had taken the bus back earlier, and Charles had insisted on driving them himself in his sedan instead of utilizing a foundation driver. The city streetlights moved across the glass windshield in long, quiet lines.
