"Alex? Oh God, finally. It's Zoe. Please don't hang up. I'm begging you. I'm at rock bottom. Evicted yesterday. Sleeping in a motel I can't afford past tonight. No money for food, let alone a plane ticket home. Jake, he ruined me. Abusive texts before he disappeared, drained my accounts. I'm alone, scared. Can you wire me enough for a flight? I'll pay you back, I swear! We can talk when I'm back, fix things..."
She sobbed, the desperation raw.
"I know I was cruel, dismissive, but I see now you were my anchor. I threw it away for nothing. Please help me home. I have no one else."
I listened in silence, the minute stretching. No words from me. Her pleas filled the air.
