The boy walked toward him. "I'm sorry they did this to you. Thank you for getting my bike back. You didn't have to chase him, but you did. Thank you."
Kendrick managed a small nod. "It's okay. I'm glad you got it back."
Melissa tried to defend herself, but one of the neighbors interrupted. "You called the police on him for helping a kid. What was that about?"
Another neighbor added, "He was returning a stolen bike, and you assumed he was the thief. That's not okay, Melissa."
Melissa's face reddened. She turned and walked quickly back to her house without offering Kendrick an apology. Collins remained beside his cruiser.
"You're free to go," he told Kendrick.
There was no apology and no acknowledgment that Collins had acted without verifying the accusation. Kendrick picked up his own bicycle and looked at the boy one final time.
"Be careful with your bike. If you see that guy again, don't chase him. Call the police."
The boy nodded and wiped his eyes. Kendrick rode away. Collins returned to his cruiser and left without another word.
The neighbors stayed after both Kendrick and Collins left. Within minutes, several of the recordings were uploaded to social media. The clips showed the entire progression from different perspectives: Collins approaching with a hand near his weapon, Kendrick trying to explain why he had two bicycles, Melissa repeatedly insisting he was lying, the handcuffs going on, and the child victim running into the scene to correct the accusation. By that evening, the footage had accumulated more than two million views. The visual contradiction was impossible to miss: the teenager being treated like a thief was the same teenager the actual victim was thanking for recovering his bike.
Kendrick rode home in silence. His wrists still hurt, and his mind kept replaying the moment Collins grabbed him and Melissa stood nearby telling the officer not to trust him. When he walked into the house, his mother was in the kitchen preparing dinner. The moment Lisa saw his face, she knew something had happened.
"Kendrick, what's wrong?"
He leaned his bicycle against the wall, sat at the kitchen table, and told her everything. He described seeing the theft, chasing the man, recovering the red bike, being stopped, being accused, being handcuffed, and hearing Melissa tell Collins not to believe him. Then he described the boy running up and proving that Kendrick had been telling the truth from the beginning.
