The dispatcher took the information and asked for her to call back when the resident returned. Susan sat at her window and waited.

Victor's McLaren came around the corner 40 minutes later and pulled smoothly into his driveway. Victor got out, clicked the car locked, and started walking toward his front door. He had taken fewer than five steps when a police cruiser turned onto his street and stopped at his house.

The officer got out and asked Victor about the box on his porch. Victor looked at it and said clearly and honestly that he had no idea what the box was or how it had gotten there, and that it wasn't his.

Susan came out of her house and crossed the street. Her voice when she reached the scene carried the particular energy of someone who believed the moment they had been waiting for had arrived. She told the officer she had been watching the house, that sketchy people had been dropping boxes there for days, and that she had called because she had proof this time.

She looked at Victor and said what she had been wanting to say since the McLaren appeared in his driveway: "There is no way you're buying all these expensive cars with legal money."

The officer opened the box, found drugs inside, and looked at Victor. Victor looked at Susan standing behind the officer. In that moment, he understood exactly what had happened and exactly who had made it happen. He said nothing further. He put his hands behind his back when the officer asked him to and was placed in handcuffs without resistance.

Susan watched them put Victor in the patrol car, and the smile on her face was the smile of someone who believed they had finally gotten what they deserved. She had no idea that every second of her walk across the street, her hands placing the box, and her face, visible and clear, had been recorded in perfect high-definition detail by cameras she had never seen and never thought to look for.

Victor sat in the back of the patrol car and thought about those cameras. The expression on his face was not the expression of a man who had lost; it was the expression of a man who was waiting.

Victor Bryant sat in the processing area of the police station with his hands resting on his knees and his expression completely calm. While the officer at the desk typed his information into the system, Victor was already running through everything he needed to do in the exact order he needed to do it. He had one phone call, and he wasn't going to waste it. He called Kevin Wallace.

Kevin was one of the most respected criminal defense attorneys in the state, and he had worked with Victor before on contract matters related to his trading business. He answered on the second ring, and Victor explained the situation in under three minutes: the drugs at the door, the officer, the arrest, Susan Benson standing in the background pointing and smiling, and most importantly, the security camera system that covered every inch of his property, including the front porch where the box had been placed.

Kevin's voice shifted from listening to working before Victor had finished his last sentence: "Give me remote access to the camera system right now."

Victor gave him the login credentials from memory, and Kevin was inside the system within two minutes of ending the call. What Kevin found on that camera footage took him four minutes to review and 30 seconds to understand completely.

The timestamp on the recording showed Susan Benson leaving her house and crossing the street to Victor's property while Victor's McLaren was nowhere in the driveway, meaning Victor was not home. The camera covering the front porch captured Susan walking up to the door with a small cardboard box in her hands, placing it directly in front of the door, straightening up, and walking back across the street with her head down. Her face was visible on the approach and on the return. The recording was clear enough that there was no interpretation required and no alternative explanation possible. Susan Benson had placed the box at Victor's door, and Victor had been miles away in his car when she did it.

Kevin called the detective handling Victor's case and told him he had video evidence that his client had been framed. The detective was skeptical in the way that detectives are when defense attorneys call with claims of video evidence. But Kevin's tone was not the tone of someone making a desperate argument; it was the tone of someone who had already won and was informing the other party of that fact.

Kevin sent the footage directly to the detective's email while they were still on the phone. The detective opened it and watched it without speaking. When the footage finished, the detective asked Kevin to hold, and Kevin heard him talking to someone else in the room. Then the detective came back on the line, his voice having changed completely: "We're going to need you to come down here."
