"Why didn't you give it to Dad?" Elijah asked. Margaret swallowed. "Because I was ashamed. And because I kept thinking there would be another day." The boy looked from the photograph to her face. Both had the same sharp cheekbones and the same narrow crease beside the mouth. It was suddenly impossible not to see. "Are you related to my mom?" Margaret knelt slowly, holding the porch rail as her joints protested. "I'm her mother," she said. "Which means I'm your grandmother. I should have told you that before I opened the box. I'm sorry." Elijah felt the world go strangely quiet. Behind the glass, Pepper whined. He could hear rain beginning to strike the roses, one drop at a time.

He had imagined a grandmother often enough that he thought he would know what to say if he met one. He had imagined gray hair and warm cookies, someone who remembered how his mother laughed as a child. He had not imagined finding her while returning a lost dog. More than anything, he had not imagined the sadness in her face. "Does my dad know you're here?" he asked. "Yes." "Does he know you have this?" "Yes." "Then why haven't we met?" Margaret did not reach for him, although he could tell she wanted to. "That's something your father and I need to explain honestly," she said. He read his father's number aloud while Margaret dialed. Her voice shook when Marcus answered. "Mr. Walker? This is Margaret Whitcomb. Elijah is safe. He found my dog and brought him home. I need you to know he is here." She listened, the color draining from her face. Then she said, "I understand. I'll wait with him by the front door." She handed the receiver to Elijah. His father's voice arrived hard and breathless. "Son, are you okay?" "I'm fine, Dad. I found Pepper." "Don't leave the porch. I'm coming." Elijah could hear tools clatter in the background before the line went dead.

Marcus arrived fifteen minutes later in his faded work jacket, his hands still dark around the nails despite a lifetime of scrubbing grease away. He climbed the steps two at a time, stopped when he saw Margaret, and immediately searched Elijah's face. "You all right?" Elijah nodded. "I brought her dog back." "I heard." Then Marcus saw the velvet box. His expression closed with a swiftness that startled Elijah. "Where did you get that?" "She gave it to me. It was Mom's." For a moment Marcus could only stare. His eyes moved to the swallow, to the scratch on its
