The guests were no longer whispering; they were staring at the Duchess in open shock. And the contempt that had moments before been aimed at Genevieve now swung, slow and terrible, toward the woman by the hearth.
"You set this trap," Arthur said to his wife, and his voice did not rise, which made it all the worse. "You took your own brooch, gave it to your maid, and had it hidden so that you might brand an innocent woman a thief before the whole county. You wept false tears and demanded her ruin, and you would have had me cast her out to be shamed and jailed for a crime that you yourself invented."
"Arthur..." Beatrice's voice was a thread. "She is only a maid. You do not understand—"
"I understand a great deal more than you imagine," Arthur said.
And then he did the thing that no one in that hall could have foreseen: he drew from inside his coat a thick, leather-bound book, worn and dust-stained, and held it up for all to see.
"This woman you have spent two days calling a beggar and a thief," he said, "is no maid at all. She is Lady Genevieve of the House of Crestwood, daughter of a man this county wronged ten years past, ruined on a false charge of fraud."
A great murmur of disbelief swept the hall; the name was known to every older guest there.
"And this is her father's own ledger, found hidden these ten years, written in his own hand before the trial. It does not merely clear his name." Arthur's eyes lifted to the company. "It names the man who truly stole that fortune, and framed an innocent house to hide the theft."
The hall erupted.
Genevieve stood in the storm of it, her chin high, tears standing bright in her eyes—but they were not tears of shame now. She had walked into this room a thief in the eyes of every soul present; she stood in it a vindicated lady.
