Silence. The kind that burns.

Nathan turned back to Derek. "You also ordered the deletion of security footage. You instructed Ms. Cole to destroy the recording of what you did. Not because it was a glitch, but because you knew it was evidence. Evidence of discrimination. Evidence of abuse. Evidence that would end your career."

Derek's chin was trembling. "I panicked. I wasn't thinking clearly."

"You were thinking perfectly clearly. You've been thinking clearly all day. Every insult was calculated. Every humiliation was performed for an audience. You didn't lose control, Derek. You were in complete control. That's what makes this unforgivable."

Nathan reached into his jacket and pulled out a single sheet of paper. He unfolded it and held it up.

"This is your termination letter. Effective immediately. You are removed from your position as general manager of this location."

Derek's knees gave. He caught himself on the display case. The same one Benjamin had been told not to touch because his hands were filthy.

"But I'm not done." Nathan folded the letter and set it on the counter. "Termination is the minimum. You will also complete 200 hours of community service, specifically with organizations serving elderly residents in underserved communities. You will attend a mandatory 12-week program on racial bias and cultural competency. And you will write a personal letter of apology to my father. Not to me. To him. Because he's the one you wronged."

Derek nodded. He couldn't speak. His face was wet.

Nathan turned to the staff. "Anyone who participated in the mockery, laughing, filming, encouraging, will receive a formal written warning. Anyone who stood by and said nothing, I understand. Fear is real. But silence has a cost. And today, you saw what that cost looks like."

He looked at Allison. "Miss Harper."

Allison stepped forward.

"You saved the footage. You contacted me. You did what no one else in this room had the courage to do. Effective today, you are the acting general manager of this location."

Allison's breath caught. She looked at Benjamin. The old man gave her a small nod. The kind a father gives when he's proud of someone else's child.

Nathan turned to Mrs. Graves, who had quietly re-entered the store and was standing near the door.

"Ma'am, I'm told you were the only customer who showed my father any kindness today. You sat with him. You spoke to him. On behalf of my family, thank you."

Mrs. Graves pressed her lips together. Her eyes were glistening. "I should have done more. I should have said something inside, not just outside."
