"What kind of trouble?"
"Just trouble."
"You eat in the library?"
Jordan's shoulders came up around his ears. "Mrs. Castellano lets me shelve returns," he said, defensive, like Caleb had said something mean. "It's not like I just sit there. It's a job."
"Since when?"
"October."
Caleb stopped walking. Jordan took two more steps before he noticed and stopped too, and turned around, and they stood there on the sidewalk in front of somebody's house with a plastic flamingo in the yard.
"October," Caleb said.
"Yeah."
"Like, the whole year."
"Most of it." Jordan looked at the flamingo. "There was this thing with Eli and those guys. At the lunch table. It's not a big deal."
It was obviously a big deal. It was all over his face that it was a big deal. Caleb thought about Eli Watts at the Casey's on Saturday with the slushie and the other kids. Eli moved, Jordan had said, at the party, about nobody, about a kid who lived on Pine Street.
"And the orthodontist," Caleb said slowly.
