Keller handed the phone back to the teenager and sighed deeply. He turned to Harry, his expression hardening. "Mr. Caldwell, based on this footage, your son is the one who initiated the assault. The other gentleman used reasonable, non-lethal force to defend himself. If anyone is leaving in handcuffs today, it's going to be Trent."
Harry's jaw dropped. The reality of the situation was crashing into his insulated world of wealth and privilege, and he couldn't process it. "Do you know who I am?" he sneered, puffing his chest out at the police officer. "I pay your salary! I own Caldwell Logistics! I am personal friends with the mayor!"
"I don't care if you're the Pope, sir," Keller said flatly. "You have two choices. You can pack up your golf cart, take your son inside, and sleep this off, or I can arrest your son for assault and battery, and I can arrest you for disturbing the peace and threatening a witness. Choose now."
Harry looked around at the faces of his neighbors. There was no fear, only deep, resounding disgust. Even Trent's dojo friends had quietly slipped away, embarrassed by the display. Harry grabbed Trent by the arm, jerking him roughly to his feet.
"This isn't over, Kessler," Harry hissed at me, his eyes filled with venom. "I'm going to ruin you. I'm going to find out where you work, and I'm going to destroy your life. You have no idea the kind of power I have."
I just stared at him, offering no reaction.
He drove his golf cart back to his massive estate, his son walking behind him in defeated silence. The block party slowly resumed, though the atmosphere was forever changed. People didn't just see me as Dave, Emily's dad, anymore. They asked polite questions, mostly checking to see if I was okay, but there was a new, unspoken respect in their eyes.
Emily hugged me tight, burying her face in my shoulder. "Are you okay, Dad?" she whispered.
"I'm fine, sweetheart," I replied, kissing the top of her head. "It's over."
