"Of course. He's just swamped right now. You know how it is with these end-of-quarter pushes." She paused, then added, "We're trying to give Jake some real structure this fall. Extra commitments can really throw off his routine."
Extra commitments. I was an extra commitment now. I told her, "Tell Brian I called." She said, "Absolutely," and I could hear the smile in it. I put the phone on my kitchen table and sat there until my coffee went cold, staring out the window at the bird feeder Grace had hung twenty years ago, the one I still filled every week for no particular reason except that some habits are all that remain of a person.
Then the November text arrived. I stood in the cold with my neighbor's F-150 behind me and held Brian's seventeen words and felt something in me go very still. Not angry, not yet. It was something quieter, like the realization of a man who had been slowly moving to accommodate someone else for years until he was standing so far from where he started that he no longer recognized the view.
I did not respond right away. I walked inside, put the phone on the kitchen counter beside the stack of mail, and looked at it from across the room. The way you look at something you are not sure what to do with yet. Three days later, Jake called me on his own using his mother's old iPad and somehow figured out FaceTime.
His face filled the screen too close, the way kids hold a camera. "Grandpa, how come you don't come over anymore?" I chose my words the way you choose your footing on wet ground. "Just been busy, bud. You know how it goes."
"Mom and Dad were fighting," he said, quieter now, like a secret. "I heard your name."
My chest tightened. "That's not something you need to carry around."
"Dad said..." He stopped and glanced sideways at something offscreen.
"What did he say?"
Jake looked back at me. "He said a word I'm not allowed to say at school, and then Mom kind of..." He paused. "She put her hand on his arm and he stopped talking."
That detail stayed with me. She put her hand on his arm, and he stopped talking. I told Jake, "Listen to me. None of that is your job to fix. You understand me?"
He asked, "Are you mad at us?" and I told him, "Not at you. Not once in my life. Not possible."
He almost smiled. Then a door opened behind him. Heather's voice came through, not raised, just present in that controlled way that did not need to be raised. "Jake." His eyes went wide. "I gotta go, Grandpa," he said, and the screen went black.
I sat there with the FaceTime timer still showing nothing for a while. Then I called my brother. Glenn had lived in Bozeman for fifteen years. He taught outdoor education at the community college there: wilderness skills, backcountry safety, all the things our father taught us in the woods behind our childhood house in northern Idaho.
Glenn had invited me to Christmas three years in a row, and every year I had found a reason to stay within driving distance of Brian. He picked up on the second ring and said, "Everything all right?" because he knows me, which meant he already knew it was not. I told him about the text and kept my voice level, because I am very good at keeping my voice level and I have learned that skill has cost me more than I realized.
Glenn was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "You're coming here this year."
"Glenn..."
"Book the flight, Stanley. I want you here. Bree wants to meet you."
Bree was the woman he had been with for two years, and I had never met her. I said, "It's Christmas." Glenn answered, "I know what month it is. Book the flight."
I sat at my kitchen table with him on speaker and booked a red-eye from Portland to Bozeman for December 23. For the first time in years, I chose something instead of accepting whatever was left over for me. What I had not counted on was what happened the night before I flew.
Two days earlier, a voicemail had come in from a woman named Pam Decker. She chaired the Tri-County Youth Athletics Foundation. She told me the board had voted to give me the Henderson Award at their annual banquet, the foundation's highest recognition for volunteer service, for twenty-two years of coaching and helping young people.
I nearly deleted the voicemail without calling back. What I had done never felt complicated enough to deserve an award. When I started coaching at the rec center, I noticed that half the kids who showed up did not have the right equipment: gloves that did not fit, borrowed helmets, cleats two sizes too big stuffed with extra socks. Grace and I talked about it once early on, and after she died I kept a line item in my budget every fall.
