It was about Lily.

If I die while Lily is still young, please do not let anyone convince her that love means replacing me.

Let whoever joins your life love Lily without demanding a role from her.

She may call someone Mom someday.

She may not.

That belongs to her.

Do not allow adults to make a child responsible for healing their insecurities.

I had to stop reading.

Grace had identified the exact danger without ever knowing Camille would become the person to embody it.

There was more.

The letter made Grace's intentions regarding the trust unmistakable.

No future spouse of mine was to exercise control over Lily's inheritance.

Not directly.

Not indirectly through the foundation.

That made the amendment Camille placed among my paperwork much more serious.

Then handwriting analysis came back.

My signature on one page was genuine.

The signature authorizing expanded foundation powers wasn't.

Someone had copied it.

The investigators traced the document preparation to an attorney who occasionally worked for Bernard Langley.

The attorney disappeared the same day police requested an interview.

That was when the case stopped looking like a cruel stepmother hiding terrible discipline methods and began looking like a coordinated scheme.

Camille was removed from the estate under a protective order.

Lily and I relocated to Hannah's home for several days while investigators searched ours.

The first night there, Lily slept beside me.

At 3:12 a.m., she woke screaming.

“Daddy go!”

I turned on the lamp.

“I’m here.”

She climbed onto my chest.

“No dark.”

“No dark.”

I left every light in the hallway on.

It took almost an hour before she slept again.

Dr. Shaw later explained something that changed how I saw my daughter.

Lily had started learning danger before she had enough language to explain danger.

That was why adults around her kept misunderstanding.

She couldn't tell me, “Camille uses isolation to frighten me when you're away.”

She could say dark.

She couldn't tell Nora, “Please document what happens because my father doesn't know.”

She could cry.

She couldn't explain that certain footsteps meant punishment.

She could freeze when she heard them.

We kept waiting for adult sentences.

Lily had been speaking the entire time.

We simply weren't listening to her language.

Two days later, investigators discovered Camille had reserved three seats on a private flight scheduled for the morning after the gala.

One for herself.

One for Lily.

One for Bernard.

Destination: Geneva.

When questioned, Bernard claimed Camille believed I had become unstable after Grace's death.

“She told me you were obsessed with control,” he said during a recorded interview.

“She said you barely noticed Lily.”

I stared at him through the screen.

“And you believed her?”

“I believed my daughter.”

“Enough to help her take mine out of the country?”

“She said she was protecting Lily.”

“Did you know she was locking Lily in a closet?”

His face collapsed.

“No.”

“Did you know she forged my authorization?”

“I knew she altered paperwork.”

“That means yes.”

“No, it doesn't.”

“Did you know about the money?”

Silence.

“How much of it was supposed to come back to you?”

Bernard looked down.

That conversation ended soon afterward.

Camille requested to speak with me three weeks later.

My attorneys advised against it.

Dr. Shaw advised me never to bring Lily.

I agreed to meet Camille in a controlled setting with lawyers and investigators present.

For the first time since I had known her, Camille looked ordinary.

No stylist.

No expensive dress.

No perfect posture.

Just a tired woman sitting across a table.

“I need you to know I never wanted Lily physically hurt.”

I stared at her.

“That isn't the defense you think it is.”

“I loved her.”
