Another video showed Caleb quietly handing Chloe half a peanut-butter sandwich.

Meredith walked in.

“What are you doing?”

Caleb tried to hide it.

Meredith took the food.

“Do you want Daniel to know what a liar you are?”

Caleb shook his head.

“Then stop interfering.”

The third video was worse.

Chloe was inside the hidden space.

The door was almost closed.

Her voice came through the narrow gap.

“Please turn on the light.”

Meredith stood outside.

“There is no light.”

“I don't like dark.”

“Then learn to behave faster.”

Caleb's tiny voice behind the camera said:

“Mom, please.”

Meredith turned.

“If Daniel finds out, I will tell him you're the one hurting her.”

Caleb started crying.

The recording ended.

I looked at him.

For two years, I had thought he was quiet because he was shy.

He wasn't shy.

He had learned that silence was safer.

The officers separated Meredith from both children.

A woman from child protective services named Elena Ruiz knelt beside Chloe.

She did not immediately ask what Meredith had done.

She asked about kindergarten.

Her favorite animal.

Her favorite cereal.

Then she asked:

“Do you get breakfast every morning?”

Chloe looked toward Meredith.

I stepped slightly so she couldn't see her.

Chloe shook her head.

“Why not?”

“If I'm bad.”

“What happens if you're bad?”

“No breakfast.”

“And lunch?”

“School gives lunch.”

“What happens when you come home?”

She looked at the floor.

“Sometimes Caleb gives me stuff.”

Elena wrote something.

Then she talked to Caleb privately.

By midnight, Meredith was taken from the house.

As officers guided her outside, she looked at me.

“You destroyed us.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

My voice sounded exhausted.

“I just finally saw what was already happening.”

Then she looked at Caleb.

“You're coming with me.”

He stepped behind my sister.

Elena said:

“Not tonight.”

Meredith's expression became ugly.

“He belongs to me.”

Caleb flinched.

I put my arm around him.

“He is not property.”

Meredith laughed.

“Wait until his real father hears about this.”

Caleb went pale.

She noticed.

And smiled.

That smile stayed with me longer than anything else that night.

After she left, Chloe ate.

Not a special meal.

Not ice cream.

Not a celebration.

She asked for toast.

Four pieces.

She ate slowly, watching me after every bite.

As if she expected someone to say enough.

I sat beside her.

“You can have more.”

She looked suspicious.

“Even if I didn't clean?”

“Yes.”

“Even if I'm loud?”

“Yes.”

Caleb sat across from us.

“Can she have cereal too?”

I almost cried.

“She can have anything reasonable in this kitchen when she's hungry.”

Caleb nodded.
